Title: Mouse hand starting to hurt...mouse to blame?
Post by: turbocharged on Thu, 02 December 2010, 07:34:48
I have noticed lately that my right hand has been hurting while using the mouse...more specifically, the knuckle/joint in my pinky that grips the side of the mouse.

I have been playing FPS games most my life, but more intensely since I began college in 2004. Since then I have got a new mouse every few years...first it was a G5, then a Razer Copperhead, and now for the past year or so has been a G9x. The first two are a bit more natural to palm grip, while the G9x is more natural to finger grip. Could this be to blame for my pain?

Dominant hand hurting? Wankel engine as an avatar? Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Short answer: yes.

Which grip are you using on the G9x? I switch them on mine often just cause they better for different things.

The G9x is a fairly small mouse by today's standards.  I tried one at BestBuy and can see why it would hurt your hand.  Even with the fingertip/claw grip I use, the mouse felt unnatural to hold.  I'd rather have a bigger mouse that I can rest on occasionally to avert fatigue.

I gave up my G9x, was not comfortable for me, changed back to Mx518, my wrist has been happier since.

I had to give up on the MX500-series years ago because the shape became uncomfortable to me, and move to flatter mice like the G3 and G9 (I also have to mouse left-handed at work to reduce the RSI in my right hand enough so that I can game outside of work comfortably).  I think this can all vary from person-to-person.

switch mice, just think of the g9x as a loss, pick another.

I find it likely to be the size of the mouse, yes.
I have also got pain in my right hand from using too small mice for too long (home and work) that I had to grip with the thumb and pinky. When I changed to larger mice, the problem got away.

That's what you get for gaming with a tiny generic mouse and a laptop (I'm guessing an Acer 5315).  The paper towels are more for wiping the tears from his eyes.

Dunno, I stole the pic from somebody's blog site. That does look like a crappy little Acer junktop, though, paired with some kind of deliciously useless little BT pocket mouse.  I personally hate it when the roll gets squished like that, the paper wobbles off unevenly.

You can also try something like this (http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/rat9.htm).

Give your right hand a rest, experiment with mouse in left hand for a while (for other than gaming).
I had developed pain in right wrist until I switched all work related activities to left. Besides its more ergonomic, hand is closer to the main keys on the keyboard.

As for whether the fingertip grip is to blame... Can't remember which, maybe logitech generic, mouse had slippery sides and the pinky was almost cramping up trying to hold the mouse from slipping

Or you can go a little more high tech ...

You can learn to relax your hand. If your mouse is too big for your hand that might not be possible.

Loosen up your grip, relax, gently rest your palm and fingers over the mouse like it was a real living fraile creature you don't want to squeeze the life outta.  Unless your sniping for a head shot.

Since it's been Necro'd I'll repeat myself.

Necro'd for sure.

It wasn't a problem with gripping too hard...been playing games for a long time with many different mice and the g9 is the only one that gave me a problem. Got my Mionix Naos 5000 in the beginning of December and am pain free when gaming now.

Trackball is a good solution. I decided to give it a shot  when my wrist developed discomfort from playing too much  Diablo2. Gotta say its well worth the trouble getting used to the trackball.

From time to time I would try to use a mouse for day2day operations but always found myself going back to the trackball.

Just got myself a M570 lately.  Joy

Still game with regular mouse though.
