Title: Laptop to Receiver Cable?

I'm looking to connect my laptop straight to my receiver in order to play music through my system's speakers instead of the laptop's. Well basically, I know nothing of the topic and needed some outside input and where better to inquire than geekhack?

I'd avoid the premium cable if you're using a laptop. I've purchased one and the connector is absolutely huge, and may cause damage to your jack's casing or to the laptop itself (because of the weight).

Ahhh, conflicting responses ! On another note, and I'm really really sorry to all, but why is everyone so interested in modifying their keyboard? I guess maybe since I've never gotten into it I can't appreciate it.

Yeah, the premium is too unwieldy. I have a couple of them, and you should only use them for permanent connections where the component, particularly on the 3.5mm end, is not going to be moving around. We're talking two rg6 (maybe rg59) cables ending in a thick and bulky oversized plug (ladies?), that will block any adjacent jacks.

I use them to send stuff from my pc to a mixer.  They were so fun to route properly through my desk... NOT. I really was wishing I would have gone with the plain variety :(

Does your receiver have digital input? Shell out some $$ and get digital output via USB or a card.
If not - just live on with the cable you got.

Of course, they go with $1000 cables. Or more, depending on the clarity you seek. Those pesky electrons and their mean ways.

What kind of laptop do you have?  If you are using a Dell Latitude, the docking stations (port replicators) have S/PDIF outs.  It worked great when I was using my laptop as a quasi-Media Center.  You can find used ones on eBay for pretty cheap.  Otherwise, use the one Ripster linked to.  When you're only talking about a few bucks, buy the best.

Are you sure those are 99.9% pure-Cu? Gold plated connectors? And so on...

I just love those hi-ends hifi cables, specialy power ones, I mean are they realy some help? Considering on what kind of electric-cables are used in side walls...
