Title: US Members: Where do you buy your groceries and why?
Post by: itlnstln on Wed, 08 December 2010, 13:36:38
I don't really care what market you are in as long as you are in the US.  You don't have to say where you buy your groceries, but I would like to know why.  I am interested how geeks shop vs. markets as a whole.

I shop at x, because I work for them, and we have the lowest price.

DISCLOSURE: I work for a major grocery retailer in the US.  Your data WILL NOT be used.  This is just to satisfy my own curiosity.

corner deli, mostly.  I dont have my own kitchen so i'm not big on groceries yet.
new york is still chain-free for the most part. I mean compared to the suburbs. Lots of mom and pop grocery outlets.

my grocery needs are minimal anyway. I know what brands and products i like and i make a bee-line for them and get out as quickly as possible.

my only recommendation is: more express lanes at checkout! :)

So mainly convenience, right?  It doesn't sound like you shop for price or assortment (selection).

that said, there are definitely grocery stores i prefer over others.  As i've started paying attention to quality of my diet of late, i find myself seeking out more organic stuff.

i guess i'd prioritize it this way:

-organic selection (tho not at exorbitant prices)
-convenient location
-price

back when i was a full time student:
-price
-convenient location
-selection

It really depends on the food I'm buying, I guess.  I'm probably just an average grocery shopper?

For example I like to buy stuff like deli meat (I make a sandwich every day for lunch), or frozen microwave snacks at wholesale stores because I know I'm gonna use it all pretty quickly or I can store it all in the freezer without it going bad soon.  Stuff like milk I don't drink/use very often (cereal every once in a while) I won't buy wholesale because I end up wasting more than I use.

However I'm also of the thought that the fresher the ingredients, the better.  So if I'm going to make something like spaghetti and meatballs, I try to get all of the herbs like garlic or parsley from somewhere like Trader Joe's (I have no idea if these are all around the US, but it's basically kinda like a niche market, they have lots of fresh stuff and stuff that's hard to find in other places)

quick reviews, if it'll help:

trader joes: aisles are "too busy". dozens of small signs on everything giving me info i dont need. on the other hand, brands and variety that you wont find elsewhere. And 2-buck chuck!

wholefoods: excellent organic selection for someone trying to eat healthy. this is key and seems trendy too.

what would make me go to a grocery store every time: a great salad bar; a great deli where i can buy readymade stuff that i can stick in my fridge too. Like readymade rice, or lentil soup, or egg salad, and a very good tuna salad is key (and even better if its also low-fat).  I'd go to such a store all the time to stock up on things i can stick in my fridge and eat over a few days.

i'm actually surprised how little price matters to me today (as compared to when i was full time student). today, i'll pay happily if the food is the right one.

seems like big part of grocery store differentiation today is making the "shopping experience" itself something different or unique (like at trader joes or whole foods).

The two we shop at regularly are: Giant (http://www.giantfood.com/) because it's the nearest and has the best prices for most basic staple items, and Wegmans (http://www.wegmans.com/) because they carry a lot of specialty items that nobody else around here does (the baba ghanoush at their olive bar is killer.)

When I lived in VA, Wegmans...I wish we had them here in NC.

In NC, usually Trader Joe's or Harris Teeter because of quality. If I need to pick up something fast or cheap, I'll run to the Food Lion that is around the corner, but I don't like shopping there.

I guess I'm a Wal-martian as explained on that other new post.  I'm a vegetarian and they have the cheapest amy's food and stuff.  Other stores charge nearly 2x for the organic stuff.

I usually like to go around 1-3 am when I can have the store completely to myself.

giant/ 1st weis if they somehow have better deals both are further away than the walmart supercenter which i used to goto for groceries, but walmart was just being walmart and the lines sucked and all their spanish employees were annoying (nothing against spanish employees, just that when i ask, "hey where is a mop cuz your store is as big as japan, i don't expect a response in spanish" which has happened on EVERY occasion.)

when i lived in VA i loved Ukrops. Man they were more expensive but it was worth it for the nicer ppl!

I like Trader Joe's.  I always make a point to stop there when I am in Chicago.  I also like to check out Meijer's (they are one of our "friends" in the industry).  Wal-Mart wishes they could be like them (Meijer's superstores, anyway).

Thanks for sharing.  I really appreciate it.

I shop at Target, Albertsons, Market Street (http://www.marketstreetunited.com/), and the local Chinese supermarket.  Once in a while I hit up Wal-Mart; the ones around here are arright.

Market Street and the Chinese market are for meat, cheese, beer, produce, foreign foods.  Their stuff is a lot fresher and tastier.

Since I don't live in the U.S., the names of the chains I shop at are irrelevant. Close to where I live, there are three stores that sell groceries.

One is a discount drugstore. It sells canned food at discount prices. It has a sale each week, and a few items are further reduced.

One is a full-service supermarket. It lengthened its hours to compete with convenience stores after the other supermarket chains were mostly driven out of our area.

One is a general store chain with a limited selection but the lowest prices on most of the things it does carry.

So I get the things at the full-service supermarket that only it carries, or a few that are least expensive there or of better quality there (bread, ice cream).

I get what I can at the general store or the drugstore instead.

Incidentally:

The general store chain is a company based in Quebec. Recently, they found a company that would handle the franchise for them in Western Canada, and so locations have only recently opened up in my area. I call it a general store because it sells clothing as well as food (and miscellaneous items like toys and remaindered DVDs). They have opened a few locations in the Eastern United States. Despite the small size of their locations, their emphasis on low prices lends some justification to a claim on a map of their North American locations in their stores that they're trying to compete with... Wal-Mart.

The discount drug store chain is headquartered in Richmond, B.C. (a suburb of Vancouver). As far as I know, it is a purely Canadian company.

The full-service supermarket chain, on the other hand, is a major U.S. supermarket chain.

Check out Central Market if you have one in your area.  They kick Market Street's ass in price (and selection).  I went to DFW for business a couple of months ago and visited them.  MS is a wallet rape (good RTE food, though).  Super H Mart is a really cool store in the DFW area.

We generally buy our groceries at Meijer, which is based out of MI.  We drive by their very modest corp headquarters on our way to our daycare.  Some of their stores have gone downhill a bit since Walmart started converting their stores into the Super Walmarts, but they're still vastly better.  They've had to eliminate baggers and such to remain competitive, and you can tell.  It didn't help that founder Fred Meijer handed over control to his son.  At any rate, they have a huge selection and good prices, and there is one a block from our house - by far the closest store.

When we can, we also shop at a small family owned market called Kingma's.  They have an excellent old school meat counter - you know, they kind where the folks behind the counter actually know meat and can make recommendations and suggestions.  I bought my first beef brisket there recently, and when I told him I wasn't sure about the size I needed, he didn't stare blankly back at me.  Huge beer selection, great produce, cheese, wine, etc... but they're not open on Sunday.

We desperately want a Trader Joe's.  My wife stops at the ones in Ann Arbor and Detroit when she's in the neighborhood and easily drops $300.

No Whole Foods here either, and when we lived in Chicago, we couldn't afford to shop there.

Funny Trader Joe's "commercial":

Thanks!

I should hit up Central Market sometime.  I'm in McKinney and Market Street is only a few miles from me, so I usually head there for specific stuff.

H Mart is really good; my mother-in-law gets a lot of stuff there, mainly for Korean food.

I actually drove all the way down to San Antonio today for work, then all the way back after staying only an hour.  My head is still spinning a little. :dizzy:

Austin is great.  I was offered a job with Dell for a boat-load of money, but I didn't take it, because they wouldn't help me do anything with my house.  I kinda wish I did take it, though, because I really love the city.  I probably would have been laid off when the economy tanked, so in that regard, I'm glad I didn't take it.  Houston's alright.  Galveston is a ****-hole (85% + Section 8).  The last big hurricane they had pretty much wiped them off the map.  Dallas is nice, too.  San Antonio sucks.

We have Aldi (Trader Joe's is also now owned by them).  Our (US, not the company I work for) stores are under completely separate ownership from the European stores, and the US stores are split up between North and South (or East and West, I don't remember right now) ownership (two brothers).  The North group owns Trader Joe's.

I haven't heard of Lidl.  I think Tesco is looking to open up in the US Market (if they already haven't), too.  Auchan used to operate here, too, but pulled out some time back.

In February 2006, Tesco announced its intention to move into the United States market, opening a chain of grocery convenience stores on the West Coast (Arizona, California and Nevada) in 2007 named Fresh & Easy
Fresh & Easy operates more than 163 stores in the United States.

Sorry, I couldn't find a pic of a long checkout line.  They don't let us take pics in Wal-Mart.  Why is it that there can be two people in line ahead of you at WMT, but it still takes and hour and a half to checkout?  Also, why do they have 57 lanes and two of them open.

I did find this pic interesting:

That's because you shop at Wal-Mart.  At least at the regular checkout lane, you get to fight with real people instead of a machine.  Our self-checkout machines work great, but that's not really what I was interested in with the pic.

We still have to goto the walmart occasionally since financee has her scripts (just nasonex) registered at walmart and it's too annoying going to the GP to get another script at a different pharmacy. (but you can pay at the walmart pharmacy instead of going to the regular checkout line at least, so it's not horrible and the reording of meds is pretty easy too).

FWIW, the Self Checkout lanes at Meijer work just fine for me.  I only get impatient with other people, especially those with 20 items (12 item limit.)  And I swear whenever it gets backed up, there's two people who don't know what the hell they're doing, and the other two machines have people waiting for age verification for booze purchases - which can't be done because the clerk is busy helping the tools at the other two machines.  It's kind of like when you pick a short line that completely stalls because someone whips out a damn checkbook.  I have no patience for that anymore.

Me... I'm that guy that has his card tapped/swiped before the screen even acknowledges I hit "Finish and Pay."

I haven't had a problem with the machines at Home Depot either - might be the same machines.

I would rather support more jobs, but this is one of those things we blame on Walmart.  Meijer had to do it to be competitive.  I could still use a lane, but I'm not going to stand in line for 5-10 minutes simply based on principle.

^^ I remember going to pick n save as a kid with my grandmother, she loved to shop there for everything, sadly they all closed in the area I grew up in.....i believe my first purchase of silly putty was at a pic n save, it was $1!!

I shop several places since no one place have all that I like to eat. European, Asian, Central/South American, and sometime North African/Middle East specialty markets. Occasionally I buy some things online like dry good that more or less can't spoil when it's a better price. Then for 'normal' stuff like dairy, vegetables, and meat I shop the neighborhood store.

I eat whatever is in the fridge. Sometimes that means starving, but I don't buy the groceries...

When it comes down to that, I just go to McDonalds.

Trader Joes if I feel like going into a hectic parking lot and buying some fresher food and snacks.

Or a Lucky supermarket or a liquor store because they are the closest to me.
