Title: recommendations for computer desk?
Post by: jpc on Sat, 25 December 2010, 15:08:54: My parents could benefit from a computer desk with a keyboard/mouse surface at an ergonomic height, like 25-26". Their current desk is too high to use comfortably.

It should look presentable in their stuffy fancy living room where they entertain stuffy fancy people on stuffy fancy occasions...

This desk will sit in front of a nice window with a nice view, it'd be a shame to block the view. So, lower is better than taller. There's not room for an L-shape desk there either.

Those are the design constraints. Any ideas?

That said, if there's a desk you love, I'm sure people would like to hear about it regardless of whether it fits this narrow description. :lol:

Unless you use a full-size keyboard. Approximately 96% of keyboard trays are designed by retards who haven't heard of computer mice.

It always frustrates me how they can't make them about 8" longer to fit a computer mouse. If they did then I might actually use one.

That just reminded me. On my Micron, my old main computer, I haven't re-installed Windows in a few years and recently came about this in my documents. No idea how it got there, probably pressed the wrong button while browsing (I only went on a few times back then and was seeking information about an IBM M5-2 keyboard I found at work).

Tables fit living rooms :P

Not really what the OP is looking for though (I use mine as a standing desk, and have a fairly high office chair and stool when I'm feeling lazy or tired).

Just make sure CLiB's parents don't mistake the computer for firewood and chuck it in the firepit.

Yeah, a lot of people like the jerker.

So Ikea discontinued it. Ikea stick-figure man looks puzzled.

It's basic and has no drawers just a plank basically. Unless you need drawers and whatnot.

i've had one and my fiance had the same one, it was awesome then i decided to wallmount everything and got her an even smaller glass desk, still looked nice.

I am not big on the keyboard treys myself, never used them, my stuff is just straight on the table.

I prefer full, massive wood desks. But when I was aborad studying I sometimes made due with some ikea stuff as well.

Just make sure you have a lot of space. Usually u need a BIG table because u need to be able to use ur keyboard and mouse while positioning them correctly to the way you sit (which obviously can change).
Then u need some more space for all the schtuff on your desk like papers, pens, drinks, foods (I know ppl start frowning now) and so on.

So:

Any desk will do, as long as it is BIG and the height is correct for you. Having containers/drawers/shelves around doesn't hurt either obviously.

It's not too tall, it's open and airy, and it has tons of desktop space. And since it's real wood finished exactly the way I wanted, it looks great. If you can put up with not having drawers, it's a solution that looks and works really well.
