Title: Key feel of HHKB Pro vs Realforce 86u
Post by: stuiees on Wed, 29 December 2010, 14:27:57
I received my Realforce 86u yesterday, and had a couple hours to poke around on it.  The overall built quality appears to be superb.  I have heard others say the Realforce feels better to type on than the HHKB Pro because of the metal versus plastic backplate on the HHKB.  I think I might prefer the HHKB.  The Realforce seems to feel a bit mushier to me.  Each keystroke on the HHKB seems to be a little more defined, with more noticeable feedback while pressing the keys.  I am not sure if it is because I bottom out my keys and the feeling of bottoming out on the HHKB is different from the Realforce?  It is hard to put my finger on it exactly, but it just doesn't feel quite as snappy when I am rifling off 100 wpm.  Once, I get some time I am going to perform Ripsters "all 45g" mod as the 35g keys feel too soft for my taste.  Not sure if I am the only one who has felt this way, but it is just my initial impressions after a short time with the Realforce.

I just got a variable weighted 87u in the mail this week.  Need to have some more time to warmup to it, but to me, the spacebar feels noticeably firmer than the hhkb...  both feel like I'm typing on bricks though after coming off cherry reds for any extended period of time...sigh.

My perfect keyboard would probably be something like:  hhkb size/layout w/ realforce build quality and cherry red switches ...I'll keep dreaming ;)

Now I want to try tenkeyless browns.

I think the next board I pick up will be fitted with reds.  Or even "ghetto reds" if I have to.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you order that from?

Wish I could point you to a store but it came from a Private sale by Metaluna (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?p=267333#post267333) (he originally had thought it was an 86).

The "mushiness" is what I thought when I got my variable weight, but the 35/30g keys are the only mushy ones imo.

It exists... kinda. You better be Korean, have a huge wallet and don't mind red, though:

And about as easy to get a date with on a Friday night.  You have to book a flight on Oceanic 815, sit in the right spot, speak Korean and THEN survive.
