Title: anyone here use KeePass (PW mgmt. software)?
Post by: Special K on Thu, 30 December 2010, 00:06:24
This is probably a long shot, but does anyone here use keepass, the free password management software?  If so, I have a question for you:

I recently started using keepass v2.13 and for some reason the autotype types very slowly. It wasn't like that when I first installed keepass. It suddenly started happening about 2 weeks or so after I installed it, and I have no idea what I might have done to cause this.

As a test, I created a dummy entry in keepass for notepad. It autotypes {USERNAME}{ENTER}{PASSWORD}{ENTER} into notepad, where {PASSWORD} is a randomly generated sequence of 100 characters using the keepass password generator and any characters except spaces.

On my PC running Vista Business x64, it takes a little over 5 seconds to type my testcase. By comparison, I tried the same test on a different PC running XP Pro 32-bit and it only took 1.5-1.6s for the same testcase.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why keepass autotype is running so slow on my main PC. Could this be a hardware issue?  Is there some keyboard setting that could be causing this?  Could my actual keyboard be a factor?  Does your keyboard even come into play when you are using any software that records and replays keypress macros?

I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling keepass on the PC running Vista and creating a new database. Nothing I've tried so far has made any difference - autotype still goes much slower on the PC running Vista.

Yeah, I use keepass on various XP and Win7 machines and have never
experienced that problem, or any other problem for that matter, with keepass .

Is it possible that your AntiVirus, AntiMalware or other 'security'-software
is doing a heuristics-scan of the autotyped string on the Vista-machine?
(It will scan it when it's read from disk into memory and once again when it's being autotyped )

Is this you btw ?

Interesting,  I hadn't considered the possibility that my AV/internet security software could be causing the problem.  I'll have to check that.  I'm using NIS 2011.

Also yeah, that was the post I made on the keepass forum.

 I'm using NIS 2011.

On both machines or just the Vista-one ?

Only the Vista machine is running NIS 2011.  The XP machine is running Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Weird - now it's typing fast again on the Vista Business computer, and I have no idea why.  I didn't even change anything that I know of.

Lastpass  (http://lastpass.com/)is a somewhat better solution, IMHO.

I use my own memory. I just don't like having an external program with all my passwords in it.

You don't, you have an encrypted database (or multiple) containing
your secrets . The program just allows reading the database  .
Some people have hundreds of log-ons to manage,
if you can remember them all they probably suck as passwords .

Maybe NIS updated or something ?

Does this program input the credentials like an automated keyboard such that it's captured by a key logger?

Yes, version 1.xx does, version 2.xx has 'Two-Channel Auto-Type Obfuscation'
http://keepass.info/help/v2/autotype_obfuscation.html
v1.x and v2.x are different branches with different feature-sets and requirements ..

It's not really important IMO, if there's a keylogger, either soft- or hardware installed, your security is compromised anyway ..
