Is it the 21st Century yet in Appalachia?  20th Century?

It's not the 21st century where I live.

I have to reset it every year because it's not Y2K-compatible.

Depends on where you are.  Like here, there's no cell service here, but people buy decent computers since there's DSL in the "towns" (aka anywhere with more than 150 people in a 2 mile radius).  Of the people outside DSL service range, I'd guess that 50% have HugesNet.

I guess it's still the 20th century for me.  I don't really like the way computer stuff has gone in the last 10 years or so, so I spend my free time playing with old obsolete stuff or modern-but-baroque stuff (Unix/Linux). :3

Down in the southern part of the state, in strip-mining country, now they definitely have a different culture down there.  I'm right on the edge rather than down in deep.  In this area (butted up on SW Virginia), it's a 50/50 cross between appalachian culture and southern culture.  Up here, we say "y'all" instead of "youn's" and "sahl" instead of "sorrel" (aka soil), although the intrusive hard Rs remain (ie warsh == wash).  A good bit of the scotch-irish lingo sticks around too (albeit with a more southern drawl).  (Eg: poke == grocery bag, clever == kind, crick == river)

Dialect is fascinating, innit? :P

Cash won't be flying from my wallet (at least when it comes to computer-related goods) any time soon.
