Title: How to change forgotten router password?
Post by: patmosphere on Sat, 01 January 2011, 21:57:55
Hi everyone here at Geekhack forums. I'm afraid I require assistance again and I've been helped thoroughly here before.
I'm afraid I've forgotten the password to connect to the WiFi network I've set up. And yes this is legit I'm not trying to steal someone else's, I have actual access to the router hardware. If someone could inform me of how to remove or change the password I would be extremely grateful. It's a Cisco Linksys WRT 160N V3. Thanks for any help :].

Do you mean you don't have the password to log on to the router administration  at all, or just that you forgot the WiFi key?

If you can't log on to the admin console, then you'll have to reset the router to factory defaults.

Resetting the Linksys Router to Factory Default

To set the router back to its factory default, press and hold the reset button located at the back of the router. After the reset, the current settings of the router will be erased and the router’s IP address will be set to “192.168.1.1”.

NOTE:  The router’s default password is “admin” without any username.

Thanks alot Bionicroach that got the job done. Ha however though, I told my friend it was running slowly so he tried to install a faster operating system and he mistook what my router version was, therefore installing the wrong OS. So that router was shot so in the end I had to go out and get a new one anyways :). but really, thanks for your help.

Somebody once gave me an old Netgear router that he had lost the password to and didn't want. I ended up having to hook it up via serial and reset it through HyperTerminal. But now it makes a great ethernet hub down in the tornado/nuclear bomb shelter.

Hmm... That wouldn't happen to be an old Netgear R314 router, would it?
