Title: Cherry G80-1865, anyone have this board?
Post by: nocturn4l3030 on Sun, 09 January 2011, 01:10:52
Did a search on here and only found one thread related to this board but didn't really have much info on it

it really seems like the best solution to my problem (a small keyboard tray, but i use the numberpad).. are these double shots?

was just wondering if the overall build of this board is of good quality to anyone that does have this board.  taobao is selling a bunch of these and i just got an estimate from obook and the board itself is $150, but altogether is $216.78

/cry

right now it's this or spend $100 less on the PLU87.. and am undecided atm.. but if anyone has this board can give me their opinions it might help my decision =)  thx

This was one of those Asian special orders. This one should exist in at least 3 versions variants:

G80-1865LWNEU-2 (MX Blue, Nkey, USB-Hub, Lasered Keys)
G80-1865LXNEU-2 (MX Brown, Nkey, USB-Hub, Lasered keys)
G80-1865HXNEU-2 (MX Brown, No Nkey, USB-Hub, Doubleshots)

A fourth variant is supposed to exist with MX Blue and Doubleshots, but I have never seen it.

The board is based on the Raptor K1, meaning it comes iwth a USB port and full nkey rollover, depending on model. Quality is okay, as good as the modern Cherry boards get. Not as good as the vintage ones due to slightly thinner case, but still pretty good. It will last several years. I have a few G80-18xx that are 20 years old and still work fine.

FYI, the model number gives it away what kind of key caps it uses. The letter after the model number in bold like this: G80-xxxxHxxx

P=printed
L=laser
H=double shot
S=dye sublimation

In most cases priced and sought after in that order as well. Dye sub being the best. HTH

I have the 1863 (MX browns, double-shots), and it's a great 'board.  The only thing I didn't consider when I bought it was how much I use the page nav cluster.  Being above the numpad makes the 'board compact, but those keys, especially delete, become very far away.  The only other, minor thing to consider is that the 0 key on the numpad is shorter than normal layouts.  I usually press that key with my right index finger, so I end up pressing the right arrow often.  After a few minutes, I adjust to using my right middle finger on that key.  Otherwise, I find it to better quality than my G80-3000 just as a comparison.

The Cherry G80-1865LXNEU2 is available in the US now with MX Brown Cherry Stems and 2 downstream USB Ports

You can order it from electronic component distributors now but if you call CDW, Tiger or Newegg  They have it available to them

It was designed as full NKRO
but build-in HUB does not support ps/2
so it is 6KRO only...

i prefer the standard layout of the G80-3000 than my G80-1800 to be honest even if the build quality is worse. I use the page nav cluster too much so my fingers have to travel further just to use them.
The USB hub is only 1.1 in my Raptor K1(my variant of the G80-1800) so there might be a limit on speed, btw.

Here is a link from Allied where you can order the G80-1865LXNEU2  It is the only US seller I could find online

http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=908SPEC&MPN=G801865LXNEU2

As for NewEgg - Provantage etc you have to call them they can special order this product Cherry has it in stock in the US.
I have no idea what different resellers will charge you.  If you call Cherry the will say $200 MSRP and you need to call CDW, Provantage  or whoever yourself.

But Look at the G80-3000 Some sites have it close to the MSRP of $130 Provantage has it for $85

If you don't like the spreadout layout, filco has a similar layout.  I only learned about this recently:

I don't think you can get it in ansi, though.

My favorite part is the location of the Pause/Break key.  Its all by itself next to the logo and lock lights, as if it is REALLY important.

Has anyone managed to get a quote or order the G80-1865 from ProVantage or elsewhere? Lowest price I've found in the US is $140 before shipping, which isn't bad compared to PCHome. On a side note, the 3000 is only $80 now from ProVantage.

Is the 3000 fully programmable?  I think the 1800 series are, and that may contribute to their higher price.

I think you should PM Bruce or start a thread for interest on the Keyboard Co sub forum.  I'm sure he can get one for you.

Called Provantage and CDW and neither of them have sources in channel for this board, so the lowest cost after shipping and taxes I could find is $162.82, pretty much the same as PCHome prices.

I don't have the exact keyboard that you're referring to, but to my knowledge ALL Cherry G80 boards are PCB mount not plate mount.  someone please correct me if I'm mistaken...

They are PCB-mounted, not plate-mounted. N8N is correct.

My daily driver is an 1869 with blues. Love it. PCB > plate imho. Better sound, better feel.

Why would no plate be a deal breaker for you?
It means that you can swap out the sets and springs of the switches without any soldering.
That means you could just pick up a board with browns and change it to blues.
The feeling of PCB mount is also often preferred over plate mount.
