Title: Mechanical keyboards with media keys?
Post by: Implicit on Mon, 10 January 2011, 06:06:55
Hi guys,

What i'm looking for is a Cherry Blue keyboard, media keys/pad, and be at a reasonably cheap price. I was about to pull the trigger on the razer black widow, but then i heard it had the same plasticy shiny look as my Razer Arctosa, and it gets real dirty real quick. I've been looking around and the das and filco 'boards are out of my price range. I've got the Cherry G80-3000LSCGB-2 in my amazon basket, ready to buy, but i'm having to give up media keys if i go this route. I just wanted to know if there are any other keyboards that fit my criteria?

Thanks in advance

This may not be helpful, but I suggested to my brother to switch to foobar2000 (audio player) and set up global hotkeys. Like.. Ctrl + numpad keys. You can use them in games etc. Because if Das or Filco are too expensive, your choices are pretty narrow.

O interesting, thanks for the advice, i'm using winamp atm so i'll see if theres an option in there to do that

EDIT: yeah there is, so if there really are not many keyboards that have it's own media keys, i'll have to go this route

EDIT 2: I went for it and bought the Cherry G80-3000LSCGB-2 from stuff-uk.net =] should arrive in a few days

I have an xarmor U9BL keybaord. It uses cherry blues and it does have speaker+ speaker- and mute.  No other media keys though. I use an xkeys keypad to program other media keys. It uses cherry browns.

Unicomp, of course, is missing a bet here. They could take the 122-key keyboard, use the extra key on the numeric keypad as the Esc key, three of the ten keys on the left as print screen, scroll lock, and pause, and then the other seven keys there, the key in the middle of the cursor keypad, and F13 through F24 could all be media keys.

That, of course, assumes that the Reset and Enter keys on that keyboard are matrixed so that they would make good control keys without a ghosting problem, and that changing from 122-key ISO to 121-key ANSI would not be a major retooling issue.

In a way, it's taking a 122-key keyboard and spoiling it - but the result is a keyboard with mass-market appeal, since it would have media keys with popular functions.

Autohotkey should give you what you need. Just make it some type of keyboard shortcut.

Steelseries 6/7G have media keys and don't look nearly as obnoxious as Razer products (although theyre mx blacks not blues)
