2007; the year my 4chan going friends introduced me to Gee. I've been an avid Korean Pop fan ever since.

This certainly isn't the cutest K-Pop MV, however. IU is much cuter:

girls generation is difficult to watch, but it's purposeful. They act cute or dumb every 12s and this makes them awesome in the minds of idiot korean zergers or asian loving americans.
Better korean girl band music would be 2ne1.

I have to disagree. I hear way more backtrack in a typical live 2NE1 performance than an SNSD performance. (SNSD has improved a lot in this area)

To be honest, I don't think either group is all that talented when it comes to singing. It's mostly just fun stuff.

yea i think koreans are the experts at monolid surgery currently. I have a monolid, but like i'm a guy so it doesn't matter, fiancee say's it really matters to girls cuz otherwise makeup looks weird and is difficult to put on. She doesn't have monolids, but her sister does and got the surgery, i actually haven't made a point to look at her eyes since she got the surgery to see, i should do that next time.

there's a difference between telling one asian apart from another asian and knowing which ones are of a distinct ethnicity i.e. : japanese, korean, chinese etc.

All i know is the white ppl at my fiancee's work are just plain stupid or just dumb racist white ppl. I say this without any hatred and have even dined with a lot of them, but they cannot tell my fiancee apart from her other non white friend at work.
My fiance is 5'2, 120
her friend is 5'2, and more than 120 (i think 160, she's pretty round, i've worked out with her and took hip hop classes with her too)
my fiancee has brown/red dyed hair (i really don't know the color, i just know her hair is dyed)
her friend has straight black hair
my fiancee never wears glasses
her friend always has black rimmed glasses with blue sides (these are REALLY noticable)
oh and my fiancee is chinese and her friend is hispanic.
And all the white ppl constantly call mix them up.
It's not a joke or anything either, they honestly make mistakes and call them one or the other, it's cuz these white ppl only see other white ppl.

I don't think it's necessarily a "white people" thing, but more just the people you're familiar with.  Twenty years ago, I for sure wouldn't have had the slightest idea of how to tell the difference between a Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.  These days I can identify their nationality with a fairly high degree of accuracy simply because I've been exposed to so many and now know what their characteristics are.

It's the same with some people from places where they haven't seen a lot of white people.  Lots of white people look the same to them.  In Korea it's still quite common for Korean children to call any white foreigner "Miguk Saram" which means "American".  In the Philippines, white foreigners are often called, "Joe", I guess due to their exposure to American servicemen nicknamed "G.I. Joe".  In Thailand, the English are probably the most common tourists, and as a result some Thais presume a foreigner is from England.  I've seen numerous Thai websites that have icons for a Thai flag and U.K. flag for indicating "Thai Language" and "English".  A good number of Americans likely would have no idea that the Union Jack signifies English.

In Asia I've been mistaken for being English, German, Russian, Canadian, and Australian.  One guy in particular always asks me, "how's Canada" and such things despite having told him a dozen times I'm not Canadian.  Asians are often confusing me with other foreigners they know.  I've lost track of how many times people have said I look just like the "KFC grandpa", despite not having a mustache, goatee, nor white hair like Colonel Sanders.  I just don't let that kind of thing bother me.

That's fine and "dandy" for places where ppl consider "cultural" oh i want to goto japan to see a population of 99% japanese or i'll goto india to see a population of 1billion 99% indians or whatever, but this is America, the melting pot of the world.

If we're talking about wild women of the jungle, the same site that hosts the Wayback Machine, run by the Smithsonian Institution, allows you to benefit from your tax dollars at work (http://www.archive.org/details/liane_jungle_goddess) for this sensational move from 1956, which apparently was allowed to lapse into the public domain.

A movie from 1956 about a princess of the jungle... which, presumably very shockingly for that era, allowed her nipples to briefly make it to the screen in a couple of scenes.

Actually, I think that's a teddy bear.

But my web searches of Finnish music have failed in one respect. I have not been able to turn up a Finnish-language cover version of "You Don't Own Me".

A Swedish-language one was sung by this artist, apparently,

here singing "Vackra Sagor Är Så Korta", which the YouTube comments describe as a Swedish-language cover of "Io Che Non Vivo Senza Te". Funny, but I could have sworn it was a cover of

but, in fact, Wikipedia does note that the Italian song has priority, this

Looking at a Swedish version of "Corrina, Corrina" led me on a journey during which I discovered that as a Blues song under the title of "Corrine, Corrina", it dated back to the 1920s or earlier... and then I found this evidence that country music TV shows of the 1950s did not all reject rock and roll as dangerous poison that would corrupt the youth of the nation:

Google allowed me to find out, when I heard this lovely - and familiar - melody sung in Finnish

that I remembered it as sung by this sweet, innocent, lovely young woman

who, unfortunately, ran into problems later - presumably at least partly because of her association with the unlikely composer of this gentle melody.

And I knew I heard this melody before:

but it took quite a bit of searching before I could get from that Flemish cover version to what I presume is the English-language original:

The group is billed as "Starship" here, but as "Jefferson Starship" in another result. I take it this is Jefferson Airplane.

Actually, with respect to Korean fathers, this sort of thing was quite true up until fairly recently.  The current generation of Korean fathers though are in general much more open to their children marrying a foreigner.  Still though I could see a lot of them objecting to their oldest son marrying a foreigner, due to the role the eldest son is expected to play in Korean families.  Still I imagine many Korean parents would prefer to see their daughters marry a Korean, but disowning them for marrying a foreigner isn't so likely these days compared to twenty years ago.

Outside of marriage, single Korean women may be very agreeable to having a foreign boyfriend, even if they might be reluctant to get married to a foreigner.  From what I gather, bringing your boyfriend (even if he's Korean) home to meet the family isn't something that's commonly done.  Once you decide you'd like to get married, then there is a big get-together where the families meet and talk about their son/daughter getting married.  Before that though, all Korean couples I'm aware of don't really let their parents get involved in their dating/lovelife.  So even if they have a foreign boyfriend, they'll likely keep it a secret until if and when things get serious.

For other Asian countries, the situation is quite different.  In Thailand or the Philippines for instance, most parents would be ecstatic to hear their daughter was interested in a foreign man.  In some cases they hear the sounds of $ once a foreign man is mentioned, but in other cases they're just happy that their daughter will likely be taken care of and isn't going to get shacked up to some local boy without a job and no future.

Well, that depends.  If she lives in Korea and you're in the States, I think the chances are extremely slim.  If you're not too old though, don't look like some monster or a slob, and are living in Korea, your chances of being able to find a hot Korean woman who looks like one of these singers are fairly reasonable based on my experience and what other guys have told me.  Have you ever been to Korea?  Just walking around any of the trendy areas and you'll see these types of women all over the place.  They're very common.  If you live here and can speak a bit of the language, you'll have lots and lots of opportunities.  Learning English is very big in Korea, so any decent native English speaker will have some distinct advantages with the women who are looking to learn English well or interested in western cultures.

Of course if you're looking at just one particular Korean woman, and she's some well-known star, you'll probably have to be something pretty special to even get her attention.

So you're saying there's a chance...

In all seriousness, I'd be better off meeting one here than doing all of that. I have no interest to move to a foreign country. In my opinion, there aren't many countries in the world that DON'T have attractive women anyway.
Title: Cute or Cutest
Post by: Sam on Sat, 22 January 2011, 23:00:41
If you want to meet an attractive Korean woman, then living in Korea would be the best way.  If trying to meet an attractive Korean woman outside of Korea, you've got a lot more competition being you're not so likely to stand out.  If you don't care if she's Korean or not, then you're probably better off not looking in Korea, being tourists to Korea wouldn't likely have the same chances as someone living here.

If looking just for attractive Asian women, and Thai or Filipinas are acceptable, then it's quite easily done as a tourist in those countries, and much easier than meeting a Korean woman regardless of the circumstances.  Also much easier to meet an equally attractive woman there than in the States, ie. in the States you've got to have something pretty special going to catch a 9 or above.  In Thailand or the Philippines, the average Joe is more than capable of pulling one.  Of course there are lots of pitfalls that newbies going that route fall into all the time.

I'd say you're thoroughly biased. You'd be surprised at how judgement of music tends to vary, especially between men and women. You'll find plenty of acts which are popular with one gender but not at all with the other (up to being considered embarrassing). The Youtube stats for target groups (when available) give hints already. In this case it's mainly young girls / women and middle-aged men. Reasons should be more or less obvious when applying a bit of common sense.
/EDIT

OK, so we've had our share of cute here. For a new twist on this thread, what about energetic, always cutting edge and notoriously unafraid?

Or what about just rocking out?
(How much do you think this has been sped up? One semitone down sounds quite reasonable, but I am just about tone deaf.)

This, of course, inspired others...

I must say I don't get J-Pop and K-Pop. Commonly sounds cheesy and/or like teen music inspired by - *shudder* - '90s Eurotrash. (The real good stuff I wouldn't be able to understand anyway, I guess.) The Japanese seem to be leading in terms of very very experimental noisy stuff, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for either (maximum entropy is not a criterion).

In terms of singing ladies from Asia, this one born in Hong Kong is about all I can offer:
...though admittedly she has more to do with the UK indie scene than anything else. Whatever.

The choreo for the GG girls is horrible, so yea that must be it, my fiancee can't stand GG either cuz of their horrible choreo.
Here let me break it down
music video start
0:10----scenic background
0:20---- group shot
0:30---- 5s of moving something that resembles choreo
0:35---- strike a pose (look cute) (do something like put out victory sign) (touch your cheeks) (smile and touch something) (look to the side then smile then touch something again)
Repeat until end of song.

quite honestly I could do their hip-hop and i was pretty horrible the year that i took hiphop. (I learned a lot learned beats, understood stuff, was able to see more into the shows like so you think you can dance, america's best dance crew... Don't hold it against me i'm not a ballet fairy but it was a couples activity, yea i danced with my woman! and what)

Here's the lovely and versatile Laila Kinnunen again:

For those of you who don't understand Finnish, once again, as with her rendition of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon", there are subtitles... in Swedish.

I think she sings this very well, but some may say she is singing slightly out of tune.

And here's another Finnish pop artist, singing something I did not expect to be covered in their language. Perhaps she heard about the tune from one of their hockey players, returning from international competition.

And, to provide further reassurance that the Finnish pop scene is anything but finished:

This is from a live concert in 2000; but the artist originally sang it back in 1974.

Apparently, though, Vieno Kekkonen, Brita Koivunen, Marion Rung, Ann Christine (Ann-Christine Nyström) and Katri Helena are still very much alive.

On the other hand, Anki Lindqvist passed away in 2007,

In that case, I will avoid the Jenny Karezi movie clip, and instead bring you recent performance by a living artist:

Since the sound quality is so-so in the clip above, here's another performance of the song:
Title: Cute or Cutest
Post by: quadibloc on Tue, 25 January 2011, 15:13:27
Come to think of it, though, since this clip from a movie is the original version of the song, at the risk of "creeping you out", I think the Jenny Karezi version should be noted:

It isn't just that she died at age 60 in 1992, from breast cancer, but before she died, the condition was - at least originally - causing her great pain, and so she became an activist for palliative care for cancer patients.

There's even a Jenny Karezi Foundation.

But the other point of all this, of course, is that this was not the original version of the song, but simply a version of the song modified for English speakers.

The words are not a translation - the song is completely different, and the music for the verses of the original Greek version is completely omitted: that version's chorus becomes the verses of the English version, and an instrumental part of the Greek version becomes the chorus of the English version.

The French version, C'est Joli la Mer, includes all the pieces of the Greek version, but the ordering and the repetition of them is also changed.

Thus, while the English version is "All Alone Am I", the title of the French version means "The Sea is Beautiful", and the title of the original Greek song means "Don't Ask the Sky".

Man, quadibloc, you're quite the resource. That was a nice tune - no wonder it became top 10 material back in the early '60s.

Whatever happened to hits out of Greece anyway? It seems there were quite a few back in the '60s and '70s. In the '70s and '80s, there was quite a bit of good stuff coming out of Italy, but that seems to be over as well. I guess the classic "modular" approach typical for the music industry back then (composer - lyricist - performer) no longer applies in today's pop business, at least for the most part.

Now with us having arrived in Greece, I immediately had to think of a certain modern-day pop singer of Greek and Welsh descent...

... who, quite fittingly in the context of this thread, performs in Finland here.
Let's just say she's one of those artists to trigger my hyperventilating fan mode. Almost seems like her temperament is contagious...

After listening to this moving performance, the words "Kaunis Nainen" will never mean the same to you again.

Unless you already understand Finnish.

I am aware that in some cases, the titles of Finnish cover versions of popular American songs aren't necessarily literal translations of the English-language titles of those songs,

(although there are resources out there to resolve this, such as Google Translate, so an exclamation of frustration and despair at working out the meaning would not normally be appropriate) but in the case of the first video in the post, I have other confirmation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JibPotmTKww) that the title of the song does, in fact, correspond to the title of the original in meaning.

Here's another impressive cover of a famous song:

I've been concentrating on cover versions because, while there certainly are also many impressive original Finnish songs...

some of these artists have performed, something that is familiar to more people here would be more accessible.

But I can understand why this might be a bit underwhelming to some, on reflection.

I'm old enough to remember the days before it was considered an imposition for the FCC to require TV stations to spend money on producing a significant amount of local content. So many TV stations would have their own local variety shows, in which people from the very city in which the TV station was situated would perform the popular music of the day. While Finland is a whole country, I can understand that this sort of thing might be perceived as mere "hometown talent".

Here is the lovely Kiri te Kanawa singing the haunting "Vocalise" by Rachmaninoff:

Now, Rachmaninoff is, of course, a Russian composer. However, I have the duty to inform you that there are some videos from Russia, labelled "Vocalise", which contain performances of a different composition. I am linking to two of the less dangerous examples of them below:

first, this one by Valeri Obodzinski:

and then this one by Muslim Magomayev:

Avoid, however, at all costs, if you value your sanity, the versions performed by an individual whose name is variously rendered as Edward Gill, Edward Hill, Eduard Khil, or Эдуард Хиль.

You have been warned.

Incidentally, this latter song is titled "Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой", which means "I am very glad, because I am finally coming home", although it is without words as such. It was written by Arkady Ilyich Ostrovsky (Аркадий Ильич Островский).

Searching the web to see if anyone else before me had noted that Hammond organs might be particularly suitable to atonal music, because of their lack of conventional harmonic content, I found a blog post about the recovery of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a video of Variations on a Recitative by Schoenberg (not an atonal composition, but once performed at UCLA on a Hammond)... and this video,

which is on topic for this thread. (More conventional interpretations are found under "Non so più", Cherubino having other arias in "The Marriage of Figaro" as well.) Incidentally, it took some additional web searching to find out more about this video. Adya is a Flemish group that performs classical music; the singer billed here as Geisha appeared with them on only one song on their album "Adya and Friends". At least previously in her musical career, she was better known as Elle Yana.

And here's something almost on-topic in a different way - an instrumental melody I remember well, but never knew the title of...

Looking for the word "cute" on YouTube just turns up people's kittens, but I see I had encountered this song before:

Ah, and here we are:

apparently a hit version, even if it may not be the original.

Ah, we're getting there: Count Basie.

And here's Lionel Hampton:

guess i missed the animation video or never really cared for it back then, background info if ppl want, the creator is Monty Oum and he produces the best animation/capture whatever he does in the world, yea his captures and what he now calls his (own secret process) is better than hollywood stuff in terms of action(resolution of course hollywood wins, but this is one guy and hard work vs. millions of dollars).
if your interested just goto game trailers or i'll give links

his breakout movie was Haloid (metroid vs. halo)(or samus vs. master chief)
http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/haloid/57998

then he does Dead Fantasy (ff girls vs. doa girls)
http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/dead-fantasy-i/115884
(it's only part 1, but the same website has 2-5)
watch it all in HD.

Awww. State of the Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_the_Art). A really classic Amiga demo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene) from '92. I still have my copy here somewhere...
Like most demos of that time, the entire program booted from a 880 KB 3.5" diskette, and accessed the hardware directly. The CPU and subsystems ran at 7.09 MHz. No OS, no Direct3D or OpenGL ...

That's one group to google and forget about.

They sell their music as "pop classics" which are nothing more than classical songs slaughtered on the altar of bad pop and commercialism. Heck, they allways seem to follow the same recipe: take a classical piece of music, slap the newest and most displaced bass and snare drum track onto a classic chore and presto - a new album is born. For extra cash, they even try to get some poor artist to sing some extra lyrics.

There is a kpop concert here in Sydney on November the 12th and SNSD will be there. LINK (http://www.kpoplive.com/2011/07/20/2011-k-pop-music-fest-to-take-place-in-sydney-in-november/)
And I'm strongly debating going, mostly because November 12th is my 19th birthday. Normally I've always said I'm not a concert kinda person, but a friend of mine is going and he told me about it and when he found out it was my birthday he started pressuring me to go. :P So what's your input /KL? And I agree with you there \KL its crazy. I guess that's how a lot of the male kpop stars are known as looking "girly" kinda like JungShin from CN-Blue (also going to be there in November).

I had thought about trying to do the English teaching route to get in, but I'm not so sure about that. I've had some teaching experience in the past and it's something I really enjoyed, so teaching back in East Asia (doesn't even have to be SK) would kind of be like a dream come true. I have a couple friends who are currently teaching in China/SK and love it so far, so hopefully I'll be lucky enough to follow suit... and I don't expect it to be easy (patience is the first thing you learn in any field where you have to teach/train someone).

EDIT - just saw the videos above - there are some very talented singers in kpop, just wish they would do pieces that are more challenging than your average kpop song (though they probably don't have a choice in the matter).

are you a white guy? can you speak english? then you're 99% qualified to teach english to any asian speaking country, as long as you're white it does matter what kind of "education" you have, of course you can't look all "ganged" up. Lemme explain, the only purpose of teaching english to students, is to give the parents the perception that their kids are being taught english to conquer the world, and of course with perception, if they see their kids learning from a white guy, well that's all they have to know. It's a quirk of mine, but any asia that learned english oversea's is unbearable to listen to in english. My sister say's the same thing, she is currently one of china's/hong kongs liasion to manufacturing, if any country wants to do business with china/hong kong and open up a factory they talk to her, and she says british and asian english is the worst to listen to (cuz they all talk english at the negotiation table), heck she grew up learning british english for 12 years, but she's been an american for 30 more.

Of course, in some Canadian provinces (Ontario and Quebec, for example) people refer to electricity (at least that which comes from a wall socket) as hydro. Because hydroelectric dams have long been those provinces' chief source of electric power, and thus the provincial electrical utilities have "hydro" in their names.

I pity the fool that marries a Korean girl thinking she's that sweet.

Indeed, but I pity the fool who marries any woman based purely on assumptions regardless of nationality.

They are also going to be in Sydney in November. Out of all the groups coming I think there are maybe 2 that I'd say I'm not particularly fond of, but I do listen to all of them.

Silly girl, you cannot hide behind that bottle.  You're holding it really close to your eye, so it looks like you are covered entirely by the bottle, but I can still see you.

Interesting news, there is a slight chance that I might be able to get a VIP ticket to the concert in November. I'm just waiting for them to release more information on what exactly "VIP" gets me that a regular ticket wouldn't, because it costs a $#%! ton more so there better be a damn good reason why I'd fork out the extra money. If it means I get front row seating and that's it then it isn't worth the extra money, but if it means I get some CDs and/or possibly backstage access or a chance to meet some of them then I'm down to pay up the extra.

Haha, I honestly don't know how to reply to that without it making me sound like a creeper or else making me sound as though I'm actually that seriously. Good one. You have silenced me, but for a moment. I shall return. *fades out*

Those shoes probably wouldn't be too bad, not much there. :P

Not quite sure if this can qualify solely on the "Cute" criteria, but I'll post it anyway.

The first one was pretty cute, I'm personally not much of an animal fan so I didn't find it that "cute". Although I did laugh at some of the stuff.

Speaking of Korea, I heard this really, really, super-exciting news (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/782) today!

What, you're underwhelmed? This doesn't even matter to you?

I'm hurt. I'm shocked. But I'm not going to lose my temper and wish for Serra Angel (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=220176) to come and smite you with her sword. I will take it in stride instead.

Wait, so that's like Yu-Gi-Oh! or something? I used to be into Yu-Gi-Oh!...when I was 12. -__- Although I did watch some of the anime recently and laughed at the cheesy english voice over.

Yep, you've got it. Another one of those games like Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokemon. But it was the first of that kind, and it's aimed at a somewhat older audience.

Oh, and here's a fun webcomic (http://www.airshipentertainment.com/growfcomic.php?date=20080629) all about Magic: the Gathering!

(Technically speaking, these pages originally appeared in magazines, and were only posted later by their creators in the form of a webcomic.)

Oh, ok. That's pretty cool. I was probably one of the few people who has never watched a single episode of Pokemon, played the card game or even any of the video games. I mostly got into Yu-Gi-Oh! because a good friend of mine bought some cards and we used to play against eachother.
