Title: How to find out switch color on cherry g80s

Hi,
I want to buy one of the cherry g80s off ebay and use it as a poor mans filco/leopold. They don't list the color of switches on the keyboards (mainly g80 8113) and cherrys website doesn't specify which model numbers have which color switches.
Also, if I cut off the right side from the track pad over would it ruin the keyboard? (homemade tenkeyless xD)

Take a look at the product code:

P = Black
Q = Brown
S = Blue

G80-8113s have been noted to use either clears or browns, depending on age.

Wow so many responses so quickly! Ok looks like it would have browns or clears, which would be great.
Per your suggestion ripster I was looking through the wiki and noticed the compaq mx11800. It looks almost as compact as a tenkeyless, it might work better than the g80s. Does anyone know if it has NKRO over ps/2?

MX11800 is a G80 board. G80 and MX keyboards are the same thing; for instance G80-8200 and MX8000 refer to the same family of keyboards.

The MX11800's close relative the MX11900 is sometimes called the G80-11900.


Anyway, MX11800s always have MX browns, while MX11900s always have MX blacks.

Would have blues? I can't fully understand this naming scheme :D

hey sixty, do you know if it at least has 6 key rollover? If its based off the G80s maybe it at least has that...

That's a g80-3000 with blues (LSC), UK layout (GB) and black case (2).

Thanks! I rather stupidly assumed it was Red switches in that board, as the G80 in the first reciew I read had Red switches, didn't realise there were so many variations!

Yea, found some tests that show the compaq mx11800 don't have any rollover.
Could anyone recommend a slim/compact mech keyboard (preferably blues/browns) with NKRO? I saw the cherry g84 on the wiki, it looked perfect, but didn't have NKRO. I know the filcos are tenkeyless, but is there something even more compact width wise?

Not true, it has 2 key rollover (2kro).

Most keyboards have 2kro, from what I understand. For example, the Unicomp Customizer has 2kro. Which is why I pwn Ripster's son in TF2 :D

If you look up the definition of x key rollover, you'll find that x refers to the MINIMUM number of keys reliably accepted at the same time. Combinations of more keys MAY work, but some of them will fail. Bog standard matrix keyboards should always manage 2KRO, as with them things start to go wrong whenever 3 keys of 4 in a 2x2 cluster are down.

Whether 2KRO is acceptable depends on usage cases and matrix routing. No typist has ever complained about an IBM-style matrix. It gets the job done for Braille input, too. Now FPSs with control keys around WASD or musical keyboard emulations are a different story.
