Title: I have just puchased my first mechanical keyboard
Post by: cheeseds on Tue, 18 January 2011, 21:58:59
Its a [strike]Razer Black Widow Ultimate[/strike] XArmor U9BL, I got it because its one of the few mech keyboards with back lighting. I live in a dark room with black out curtains and do most of my computering at night, so that back lighting is a requirement. [strike]Nor am I too worried about it not supporting[/strike] With full NKRO, I can learn to touch type past ym current speed of 20 to 30 WPM

if I like it I may just replace the Cherry blue with browns, because i game a lot and do abit of programing on the side (im getting my degree in computer science) from what i can determine blacks and reds are good for gaming but lack the tactile feel for typing, which leads me to cherry browns (or clears) as the best option for me. so long as cherry browns have a space for the LEDs, if a mod already exists for this would some one please link it.

I also need to find something to do with my old and broken logitech G11, I was thinking something like this (http://www.instructables.com/id/Wallet-made-from-a-computer-keyboard/)

well you may be able to just cancel the order   :P   btw, my board is an XArmor U9BL, almost the exact same as a black widow, but has NKRO and better made all around from the reviews.

That keyboard wallet thing is a good link.  Ill have to keep it in mind.  More importantly, the link contained a suggestion to consolidate all your club cards into one using this: http://www.justoneclubcard.com/

Great idea.

you really should complain to razer, they pulled a BS move with not cancelling your order until 2 days later after it had already shipped

that is....very surprising

usually the only thing that stops people from getting a mech keyboard is the noise!  so long as they have the money for one to start with  :P

i think it has something to do with the frequency of the sound maybe the membrane board is in the range my headphones dont keep out, and the mech board's frequencies are?

they should sound very similar, being the same switch and all.  I think that they are both plate mounted but i am unsure of the BlackWidow, it may be PCB mounted.  I have not really read up on it at all since i am not a fan of Razer at all.  I like my mice Logitech and my keyboards a good quality mechanical   :)

I just purchased my first mechanical keyboard too (Das keyboard Ultimate Silent). I'm very new to this and similar to the OP I've been researching and reading threads to see what would be best for me (and accessible at a reasonable price).

Question: Are there WASD or ESC/DEL Keycaps for Das Keyboards (similar to FILCO)? I'm guessing no, but I thought I'd ask anyways.

as far as i know, they are the same.  At least they are the same shape and size, the keycaps may have different printing methods but i am not sure about that.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Yep.  You can see the Key Reference Wiki Entry here (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Key+Reference+-+Pics+and+specifications+for+various+manufacturers+keys#Filco).  Both the Filco lavender and yellow will fit.

Thank You Ripster! This is incredibly helpful!
