Hey guys,
I've been lurking these forums for a few weeks now, learning all sorts of things about mechanical keyboards. I read the giant, informative FAQ thread which was very useful. In addition, I've watched several youtube videos and read countless reviews all about the popular mechanical keyboards of today.
However, I'm still very, very lost. I'm a senior in High school going into College, so I don't have loads of money.
I would be using the keyboard for typing many papers as well as playing a lot of Starcraft 2.
I'm pretty sure I want to get Cherry Blue as I like having a lot of response
Right now the keyboards I've been looking at have been:
Razer Black Widow
SteelSeries 6gv2
Das Keyboard
I've read that Das and the Blackwidow get really nasty after a lot of use so that's a turn off.
I would consider getting a Filco but I have absolutely no clue where to buy one :x ( I live in the US )
Anyways, if any of you guys have any suggestions as to what I should get, preferably under $120, I would really appreciate it :)
Thanks!

Welcome to Geekhack! The cherry I'm evaluating in my Sig can be had for $50 shipped with browns or clears, fwiw. Someone else may be able to help you find a good deal on a board with blues.
-
If you're going to be doing a lot of typing, I would go for the blue switches, which will be perfectly fine for gaming when it comes down to it. I use a blues filco on my windows box and use it when playing WoW.

Get a Noppoo Choc Mini with Cherry Blues from Taobao. Really nice board, and it's NKRO under USB.

How much are they shipped to the USA?
Mine was originally ~$121, but then I got a refund for like $11 so it ended up being around $109 via airmail. But you are going to be waiting a while, Took 3 weeks for mine to get here after ordering mine on the 31st of December.

Welcome to Geekhack!
My best advise is to wait until feb and see what elitekeyboards will have in stock. We know they are getting some Leopolds in. Remember all the good things you heard about Filco? Well supposedly the Leopold is just as good if not better. We are not sure which models EK will be stocking, but it may be worth waiting to see what they offer.
I assume you want a full size board as the 3 you mentioned are all full size.
If you dont want to wait, your cheapest option will be either a rosewill, black widow or das keyboard.
Das & Blackwidow do get a little fingerprinty over time, but its nothing that a few seconds with a microfiber cloth cant fix. They last better too if you put plastic polish/wax on them.
The Das with a student discount is very affordable (you'll need an @edu email though), the non backlit black widow is also a good board for its pricerange too.
The Rosewill (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201040&Tpk=rosewill%20mechanical) Is only $100 too, and its not the shiny plastic, but you will have to deal with a giant rosewill logo in the upper right corner. They are good quality boards too.
I too would say blues sound like a good match for you, or clears. But clears are expensive ($170ish) as you can really only easily get them in Deck boards.
I would advise against the streelseries board, blacks are not your cup of tea if you like a lot of response to your keypresses.
Good luck and welcome to your new expensive hobby ;p
Once you buy your first one, it does not end there.

Oh yea I forgot about the rosewill that'd be a good option!
-
Wow guys, these posts were absolutely incredibly helpful!
I had forgotten the 6gv2 were blacks, I don't think I will go with that choice.
As for the Blackwidow and Das, all I've heard was that fingerprints and gunk collects on them, but if they're easy to clean, then I suppose that's not a big deal.
The Rosewill looks like a really good choice, although I do hate the logo xD
When the Leopolds come out, roughly how much will they be? Every other keyboard on elitekeyboards is >$200 o_O
Edit: Personally I never really use the NumPad, and I don't really mind if it's there or not

I'm hoping about $110 to $120 for the Leopold.
-
Hey guys, thanks again
I just read every review on newegg about the Rosewill keyboard, and I'm incredibly impressed.
I think this is the keyboard I've been waiting for.
The only thing is, I don't want to buy the Rosewill and then find out that the Leopold is a lot better for only a little more money.
However right now I just want to cave and buy the Rosewill xD

Wait, WHAT? Affordable MX Clear boards?
*peeks on eBay, finds this (http://cgi.ebay.com/REFURBISHED-CHERRY-Keyboard-G80-8113HRBUS-2-/290392734351?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439cc17a8f)*
$55 shipped, but still a pretty damn good deal...oh crap, now I feel like buying ANOTHER keyboard! (But will anyone buy a G80-8113 mostly refitted with Cherry MX Blues after I'm done using it as a switch donor for the DSI Modular Mac?)
Anyway, you'll have to be careful when you're frequenting this board, or else you could get that same itch to start collecting keyboards.
That Rosewill board looks like a great starting point. I would've chimed in with the DSI Modular Mac, except it's tenkeyless and now $100 rather than $80, so I'm not as certain that I could recommend it over all these other Cherry MX boards.

The leopold may be offered in a white color, if thats your thing. Nothing against black keyboards or anything.
-
Reopord.

Yep, I posted a mini-review and photos here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=14550). They are "refurbished" just so you know; seems that they came from POS environments where they were fairly heavily used. Despite the $55 price, he accepted my offer of $45. Your mileage may vary :D
I kind of feel about it like Ripster is with his DealExtreme scissor board...it's my baby :D
For the price and what you get, I think it's one of the best deals around. However, I do recommend contacting the seller beforehand and requesting a board with the switches you want (say white or brown - he doesn't understand "clear") and ask that it's "clean". Worked for me anyway.

Actually, the student discount just requires a school ID(scan or photo of course). It's 24% off, which drops it down to $98 without shipping(or $102 for the "silent" brown cherry model).
