Title: First time caller
Post by: xira on Sat, 22 January 2011, 01:53:58
I've been lurking these forums for a while, mostly because I've been looking for a Mechanical Keyboard for some time now but could never commit to the investment. Now that I've got a promotion money is less of an issue than before. :)

I can't believe last night I read through all 70 pages of the Razer Mechanical thread but uh.. I did, and I don't really regret it at all. I think you guys are great. (I was a semi-regular at OCN and enjoyed many of Phaedrus's posts there and to no surprise he posts quality content here as well)

Anyway enough with the introductions.

I've got my eye on the Das Model S Ultimate with the Otaku layout. I absolutely adore the way Cherry Blue's sound and feel.. so I'm set on that. However I'm a bit skeptical about the Glossy Acrylic finish. I'm using a Razer Arctosa right now, and even with a Microfiber cloth I got with my glasses it still seems to scratch pretty easily. I've read about using Novus and whatnot to remove scratches but it's both something I can live with and something that lingers in the back of my mind of possible buyers remorse.

Being on the west coast of North America, Filco is out of the window and although Leopolds look promising I'm thinking in the here and now. I will be making a purchase in early February regardless though, so it may very well be ending up the dream scenario everyone hopes it will be.

Now I did eye the Razer and found some fantastic data to skim through here about it (as mentioned earlier) and I'm definitely not okay laying 130USD for no NKRO. Another problem I have with Razer is their general marketing tactics in general (seems really cheesy, and their PR seem to be a bit .. douchey) I also feel the BWU looks a little bit too ricer for me (Need for Speed Racecar anyone?) That in combination with the oddly placed Fkey/Macro keys kind of combines into a pretty nasty deal breaker.

Without going on too much I hope the conversation will be productive :)

Filco isn't out of the picture, just depends on how much you are willing to pay.

I ended up buying my Filco from armygroup for about $150 shipped to California.  Armygroup is probably one of the only places you can get them now, aside from keyboardco (which is UK) or possibly the classifieds.

If $150 sounds a reasonable price to you, I'd go check out the Armygroup thread here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=13111).

There's even a nice little buying guide on the first page :).

Hi xira, welcome to geekhack! =)

If you were brave enough to get through the Razer mechanical thread you should be able to handle the glossy surface of the Das. I'm just sayin ;)

Although it's always possible that things can change in the next few short weeks, perhaps you should check out this keyboard shoping wiki. Obviously you would want to focus more on the Cherry blue switched keyboards.

Do keep us posted as to what you eventually do choose.

After reading through http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:12688 I am definitely considering this vs the Das as it seems to the closest without the glossy tradeoff. A few of the anecdotal posts in regards to QA has me kind of nervous though ;<

I see you're in the bath with a ducky now! You must be thinking about a ducky keyboard ;)

Rosewill is definitely considered a good choice and build quality has been said to be on par with Filco. If you want a solid board with cherry blues and don't feel like waiting for EK to stock Leopold, this is definitely a sound choice.

the Leopolds should come in stock over at elitekeybaords.com either the end of January or early February, so wait for that for sure if that is when you plan on making the purchase!

EDIT: never mind, just heard end of February.....

Wilder things have been promised and not delivered...Bruce from theKeyboardCo promised to restock those bumblebee Realforces around Christmas and never did. Made QUITE a few people unhappy.

HOWEVER I must say that Brian from EK has generally been good about dates...usually when he gives an estimate for an item being in stock, it's accurate. So, as long as your info came from him then I would say there's a good chance they'll come on time.

...that's what she said.

Better not to promise something then, until one knows for sure :D

Working in retail, I've run into similar situations, so I'm a little more understanding.  We've got some pieces that just showed up in the store about 2 months ago.  We didn't have them in stock so I ordered them for a customer, only to get word two weeks after we ordered that the items were discontinued and the order would not fulfilled.

This happened to me at Joseph a bank clothing store. They ordered a jacket for me that they could never hunt down even after several weeks. Rather than refunding me my money, they allowed me to select any item in the store regardless of price.  I ended up getting a very nice $800 leather jacket for about $100. Sometimes, these misunderstandings work in the customers favor.

Hi Xira,

Firstly nkro is nice to have but it's not necessary. 6kro should be sufficient for 99% of games out there (1% as in beat mania, o2jam). So unless those later games matter to you it really isn't such a big deal and as such 6kro should be plenty fine. But for me i want it just because i'm already spending a lot so why shouldn't i get nkro while i am at it :}

That was why i got my ducky keyboard. It uses a usb to ps2 adapter to get nkro.

Now it seems ducky has come up with a USB nkro model meaning you don't have to use ps2 port at all. But like others pointed out already in the forum, unless they did it properly like microsoft's sidewinder, it may end up quirky like the plum that didn't work on a mac or other problem.

Anyway razer is 2kro ... kinda odd since they are marketing it as a gamers keyboard :/

And another thing, blue switch has the quirkyness to it making double tapping not so nice. Some gamers say it hasn't bothered them, but others say it does. So there you have it :X

Maybe start out with cherry mx browns ?? thats what i am using for my first mechanical and i like it. The blues and blacks have higher pressure actuation points so with the browns as a reference point, i don't think i would like that :/

He (or she?) already said they like blues and want to stick with them. Also they said nothing about gaming so I assumed they didn't care about 6-kro/nkro. Of course, 6-kro is fine for FPS gaming.

I don't trust Google either.

I Google Image Search "Cherry Corp US Sales Manager" and get this as the first hit.

I would also try searching ebay! I bought my 5din to ps2 converter and it has no issues with my chicony-5181.

requesting anecdotal from the community. is there much of a sound difference between the das model s and the rk-9000?
Title: First time caller
Post by: keyboardlover on Tue, 25 January 2011, 07:58:50
Based on the fact that they both have plate mounted switches, I would guess not. However the difference in keys could change the sound. I would listen to sound samples and check out video reviews on YouTube.

Sometimes it's good to have a good old Nikon vs Canon flame war to take your mind off of things though. :P

Nice cameras. I do object to the definition of 'street' in the Leica users' jargon, which are pictures of females when they're facing the other direction.
