Title: The P90X
Post by: hfcobra on Sun, 23 January 2011, 18:30:26
Alright, so i think i am going to start this soon to try and get a girlfriend after 1.3 years of nothing. I am a pretty skinny guy and most college girls dont find that too attractive. Like 6'5" 150lbs skinny.

Anyone else done this? Or is in the middle of doing it right now? I get really bored while working out so i think that i will need someone to tell me to deal with it and go work out, like a coach or motivator or something lol.

Haha, I did the P90 thing a while back.  Definitely builds muscle.  Not too too bad on a daily basis, but 6 days a week gets boring real quick.  Good luck bro.  And yes, it does work.

P90X is awesome.  I did it for the better part of the year and saw great results.  Injured my shoulder and never got back into it.

Was actually thinking of starting back up this week.  Wanna be my accountability partner??  :)

I'm a fairly fit person.  Like not incredibly fit, but I play softball basketball occasionally.  (read that as run around out of breath)  And I couldn't do the P90x.  I could only do the P90, and that was enough.  It was rough.  Just joined a Gym, so I'm going to give that a try.  If that doesn't work.  I might be seeing if I could get a partner myself.

also, i think that i am going to use this thread to document the workouts.  We should both do it to see how we improved!  or at least check weight    :P   i am no fat or muscle to start so any gain for me is good, starting the workout now.    I dont think that i will post before/after pics though, just seems a bit odd to me.

I don't think it's the best system to gain weight.  Most people lose weight on it- probably not for you.

Also, at that height/weight, you'll get nowhere w/o tons of calories.

Check out Body By Science (http://www.bodybyscience.net)  12 minutes a week and you will see strength gains for sure.  I and a few people I know have been doing it, with measurable results.  The workouts are 12 minutes of hell, but you can do anything for 12 minutes, right?

the p90x also has a lot of weight lifting, so it should be fine for me i would think.   it mixes cardio with the weights.

p90x is a good program for overall fitness.

If you want to put on mass there are better ways of doing it.

Make sure to eat or you'll just end up spinning your wheels.

EDIT: cobra, post up which workout you do and I'll follow along. I can't keep letting work and school be an excuse not to work out.

Mass is overrated.  If you are tall and lean, you have a high metabolism so as was stated above, you need to make sure you eat (it does have a dietary regimen that should help you out).  If you really pursue this work out you will build strength and flexibility - the flexible part may not seem important now but in ten years believe me you will appreciate having it.  Everyone has a different body type and your best bet is to accentuate it.  I am 6'1" and have been mostly doing cardio for the past year (running 6 to 10 miles on trails and 5 hours of racquetball a week - the running has slowed due to cold weather) but even with what I am doing I have noticeably gained muscle.  The P90X is a great program - I have only done the yoga workouts; but if your end game is to get "laid", you should reevaluate your goals.

i never said that was my goal, just finding a gf is fine, i get lonely.  Being in better shape never hurts that    :)

also, i am doing the standard workout, not the doubles or the cardio.  Just finished my first workout a few hours ago and ate some food, now i am going to go sleep very soon.

ate some food means after workout protein shake, a 5 egg omelet w/tomatoes, onions, and cheese of course, some fried cheese, some milk and a few bowls of cereal.  Is that enough food?   cause i eat that much pretty regularly.

me and fiance did insanity last may, did it for 45 days out of the required 60 days.
quit cuz it was insane! well just the repetitive workout of it drove us crazy. It didn't seem to change my body and i eat "relatively well" (i don't go I Must supersize!, barely step in a fast food) but i liked "feeling fit" part.

Thought i'd just chime in here, since most ppl go insanity or p90x... i think i might give p90x a shot too, idk.

I think if you want some mass mainly for cosmetic reasons you should try body building instead.
Building muscle mass is more of a question of what and how much you eat.
I recommend you to find a qualified professional especially if you are completly beginner.

I started nosing into CrossFit a couple years ago while I was in Afghanistan. I eventually drifted away because I don't normally have access to weights, but I try to stick with XF's principles and formats. My workouts are mostly bodyweight and I'm in better shape now than I was when I graduated from Parris Island almost 30 years ago.

For a good bodyweight program, check out the program (http://www.metrodash.com/training/2011-Training-Program.pdf) suggested by the organizers of the Metrodash (http://www.metrodash.com) races.

I started Scooby's workout plan, and bro, I can tell I have been doing it wrong for years.  I started his beginners workout to evaluate, and damn, I am feeling it.  I'm going to stick with Scoob for awhile and see how it goes.

I generated a Scooby workout and it pretty much told me to do what I've been doing since '08: a couple days a week of bodyweight calisthenics and a couple days a week of running. I'm lean and fit, not muscular.

I have a little bit different goal in mind.   I am looking for lean and fit.  I play disc golf, and too much muscle would impede my ability to throw properly.  I don't want to get big, just more fit.  I'm not stomping fools in Afghanistan everyday, either.  I already have very wide shoulders, if had bulk, too, I would never be able to type.  I already have to sit pretty far away from the keyboard as it is to get my arms in a comfortable position.

While guys in shape look nice, their personalities/characters tend to not be so much. I think getting in shape is a good way for you to appreciate/love yourself more, but I don't think it will ease you meeting the kind of women looking for anything other than shallow superficiality. Loving yourself for who you are is the most important to having a successful relationship, and if working out helps you do that then great. I wish you luck :)

Not this, as I'm about to get into that before the end of the year. :)

As far as OP goes, if you're lean and looking to put on some muscle, I don't suggest P90X.  It's good if you want to build endurance or a fat dude looking to shed weight and gain muscle, but for someone who lacks muscle mass you'll get much better results lifting with barbells at the gym.

Use Madcow's routine or GST, they're both good for someone starting out.  Very simple workouts that work all of your muscles instead of focusing on isolation.  Build strength first and mass will come.

Good luck!

Crossfit has been insane!  Man does it kick your butt.  The workouts are a constant reminder of just how out of shape I have become.

We start with warmups and stretching, move to instructional work (ex. proper squat form), and then do some sort of circuit (different every time) that absolutely kills.  Everyone is either crying, puking, or simply laid out exhausted at the end.

I hate it during the session, but appreciate what it is doing for me afterwards.  :)
