Hi geekhack forums! Word around the net is that this would be the place to ask about older mechanical keyboards. A few days ago i found an AT style IBM Model F keyboard for $15 at my local goodwill. I decided to buy it and much to my surprise it still works, quite well actually. I really enjoy using this keyboard however it has some cosmetic issues. First off there appears to be quite a bit of crud under the keys that I really want to clean out. Also while the case barely has any scratches the plastic is rather badly yellowed. A quick search of the wiki and the forums (along with the rest of the internet) did not yield any hints as how to disassemble and clean my new toy. So any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to clean all the keys and caps, get all the crud out from below the keyboard and reverse or reduce the yellowing of the case.

the wiki's tend to cut off on the first page, so click the discussion tab up top to continue reading

You can easily remove most of the keys and clean out the assembly, but be careful not to remove the spacebar.

Thanks for the quick responses, however i have a question. Judging from the article the ripster mentioned, the casing on my model f is made of "Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene" is that correct? Oh and thanks for the tip about the space bar windows, one of the things I have gathered about the Model F is that the space bar is a bit of a pain.

You can remove the spacebar easily, but you will need to open the internal assembly to reinsert it properly.
