Title: Question to 10 keyless users.. that use numbers often.
Post by: mashingkeys on Wed, 26 January 2011, 21:10:27
Currently typing on a full board; always have.  I do use the 10 key area a lot, and I was wondering what some of you use as a substitution?  I think the choc mini has a function switch for them in the main rows, but what about other boards?

The PLU ML-87 caught my attention, and it's equal to or possibly even LESS than what I was about to pay for the Rosewill RK-9000..  something about the 10keyless style is just really attractive to me, but I don't know if I'd go crazy without my numbers D:

I just learned to use the number row...it's not really that bad once you get used to it.

I realized the thing the tenkey is for. One handed keying when you're holding material in your right hand.

I bought a numkey pad just in case but have gotten used to just using the rows above the letters so I don't really use it anymore.

it feels more for if you dont have to deal with ALOT of numbers.

in the office i got a number pad on the laptop since there are a ton of transactions that must be keyed in so the number row is a pain.

those 10 keys or so makes it quicker

basically see if you like how a laptop would be without the 10 keys

I don't have to deal with like spreadsheets with a tenkeyless, but I'd say I use a fair amount of numbers for an average user. It really wasn't a big issue. I did pick up a separate numpad recently, just in case I need to do some serious number entry, but the ergonomics of having my mouse closer to WASD was the main reason I went tenkeyless, and I don't plan on ever going back.

Autohotkey with Caps Lock as an Fn key. Hold down the key, and part of my keyboard becomes the numpad. Works when I need it, but usually I just use the number row.

Typists are good at typing the number row. For accountants, ten-keys is a must.

numrow works most of the time for me, if i have to do some heavy number action, then i'll use the nostromo which is set for numpad. But usually can just default to numrow.

Why you want a numpad:

1. Nethack
2. ?
3. Numbers

There's nothing wrong with a separate numpad if you feel you need it. Gives you more freedom in switch choice, too. For example, not that many people prefer MX blacks for typing, but in a numpad they do a fine job.

Well ultimately it depends on what you're planning to do with it. At work, I ragequit unless I have a tenkey for my laptop. At home while playing sc2, I can care less.

Accountants use the tenkey. If you're planning on typing numbers longer than six digits regularly, I'd recommend the use of the a tenkey.

I work in retail and need to type multiple UPC codes quite often.  When I was using my HHKB exclusively, I bought a numpad to go with it when I was at my desk (I don't bring it with me).  That said, I don't typically buy tenkeyless 'boards.  The HHKB and the Noppoo are exceptions due to their particularly small layouts.

Thanks for all the opinions :D to be honest, I mostly use 10key for personal financing and my absurd passwords.  I don't use it all day long, so i think it'll be a welcome change.

Now the question is, do we have a faq for ordering with obook?  It seems to be the preferred way to order things overseas here

A gentleman from my thread referred me to this post:

I hope it helps.

Thanks for that link.. I can find the keyboard just fine on taobao, but I can't seem to find one that is specifically mx blues.. they all seem to say blue/brown/black.

For example: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=9022132476

Do I specify that preference with obook?

I can't say for sure but that looks like it's offering two choices, black and brown.

If you hover the 茶轴, you can select it, which makes it brown switches. However, I'm not completely sure so don't trust my word on it.

I'm sure someone more experienced can jump in with their advice.

Let us know what you find out!

Yep, bytemeavaj is correct, the two options listed are black and brown. You'll need to find a listing that has "青轴" as one of the options. To order, just email Obook the link to the item and something like "青轴 option" or whatever the specific option says. For example, this (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=8437736872) link has an option for blues, if you're wanting a black keyboard with legends, or this (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=8380926691) link if you're wanting a blank white one...

That is a very handy feature of the tenkey, one that I miss.

If you're wanting it quickly, I suggest going with the default EMS/TNT shipping option. It ended up being overnight delivery for me, and I believe a few others, despite their estimate of 1 week delivery. The keyboard was actually in my hand before the tracking number was working on the website.

Hmm, so usually it seems people get a quote within a few hours from obook, right?  I got an e-mail back just alerting me about potential delays through Feb 8th (which I understand due to the holiday), and it said
