Title: Girlfriend wants a slim, small keyboard for work.
Post by: turbocharged on Thu, 27 January 2011, 20:24:35
So not two weeks after selling my TG3 BL82 my girlfriend tells me she wants a new keyboard for work that is small form factor. She never really liked the TG3 much, but would have probably used it. Anyway....she loves laptop keyboards because they are slim and flat (she is currently using my old Lycosa at work), but wants something without a numpad as well. So the requirements...slim, flat, small, tactile.

Here is what I have come up with so far...haven't shown any to her yet...just looking for other recommendations or comments on what I have found thus far....

Top of my list: Cherry ML4100 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Cherry-G84-4100-Beige-Compact-Computer-Keyboard-new-/220637755300?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item335f08f7a4#ht_2341wt_1139)
Next down: Ripster's Deal Extreme Board (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/78-key-compact-slim-usb-keyboard-black-160cm-cable-44378)
Next: Siig Mini (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823191005) (newer one, not the original with white alps)
Lastly: Some Addesso  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166021)board on Newegg

I originally thought the same thing (mostly because I want one), but then realized it is A) probably too much money (got a quote of $120.85 shipped) and B) is not slim.

...And she just shot down all of my suggestions except the DealExtreme board.

Thought that the others didn't look like they were slim enough.

I say go with the DealExtreme board then... :P Yeah, looking over your list, I figured she'd shoot down all but that. It's really not a bad keyboard, just ask Ripster, he'll go on and on and on about it... ;)

Not sure if this is slim enough, but thought it was worth the suggestion.

That's the same thing as the ML4100 that I posted except black. Was my primary suggestion, but she wasn't a fan.

You can get the noppoo choc mini for a lot cheaper, perhaps ~90 USD shipped. Go to the 'it's in the mail thread', last page.

Nah - 2 to 3 weeks.  Plus there are a TON of sexual "entertainment" devices you can order at the same time for the GF.

The breast stress reliever is well known around here but they have the new version for females (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/stress-reliever-for-girls-10546) (NSFW).

I should have something flying around here...my old compact hom. Monterey K371 "tactile rubber membrane switches". Does give you that tactile bump, just less pronounced then on a regular mech. I prefer this board to scissor switches. You might be able to find one of these used pretty cheaply, its an okay board.

Tried googling for pics but they seem scarce. Also, there is some company that makes a "K371 double handed lavatory faucet tap"...I did find one, since my camera is charging:

Case of this one was painted, mine is a dark aquamarine/blue

I'd say go with the DealExtreme board. Mine showed up in 2 weeks about, and it is quite compact and handy to keep in my bag.

DealExtreme board it is. I was really hoping to talk her into a ML4100, but guess that's not happening.

Except, well, their opinion is their opinion, and can't be wrong.

Besides, I think you're nuts for thinking those awful things feel even remotely decent.

Strokes, folks, and all that. Stop being so judgemental.

I recently bought that SIIG you mentioned in the first message. It is surprisingly high, so I have to use wrist rest pad with it. Other than that it is decent keyboard, using it all the time (with wrist pad). One annoyance I initially had with it is that it tends to turn on NumLock by default on the login screen in Windows, so instead of J it types 1, instead of K - 2 and so on. But it is resolved now.
Also, as people say that DealExtreme shipping takes a while, you might take a look at this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YGVDDU (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YGVDDU). This is really slim with standard keyboard layout (it's important for me, don't know how it is important for you).

It would be funnier if you were higher.  Mickey Mouse Condom Holder (http://www.intimategadgets.com/product/creative-cartoon-figure-tin-box-keychain-with-2-hidden-candy-style-condoms---mickey-mouse-53024)?

Wow, just wow...  I wonder if those were designed for men, or for women to carry inconspicuously.

This one is a true HHKB Killer (http://cgi.ebay.com/Ultra-Slim-USB-MINI-Keyboard-PC-Laptop-Mac-/180618488989?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item2a0db36c9d).  Even has a removable USB cord!

Hate when they put Fn key in the lower left corner instead of Ctrl. That's why I can't use ThinkPad USB keybtoard :(

If it were for home, she might be all over that one....definitely a fan of pink (but more pink/black, not pink/white).

Here is the computer that I built for her earlier this year. Modded the case and added some ultra flat black paint and florescent pink clear over white.

and this is the keyboard she is using with it...
