Title: Bottoming out, blue cherry (w/ video)
Post by: Vorlik on Wed, 02 February 2011, 23:29:47
I Just got my first mechanical keyboard in the mail yesterday; the Rosewill RK-9000. I love it. However one that thing bothers me is the spacebar. In the video you'll hear a distinct noise from the rest of the noise the blues make, which is my spacebar bottoming out. I bottom out maybe 30% on the rest of the keys, but that darn spacebar, is it inevitable? Or should I give it more time?

LOL better wash the microphone.

If I am not mistaken, you can grease the stabilizers with lithium grease to reduce the sound.

Give it more time, I still whack my space bar on blues when I really get typing. It's kinda like "takka takka takka takka takka takka THUNK (at which point internally I shout to myself BOO YAH!) takka takka takka takka"

I actually like the solid, "ker-chunk" of the Costar spacebars.  It's the one thing I miss on all my other Cherry 'boards.  The Realforce spacebar is pretty nice, too.

Because it's significantly louder than any other noise the keyboard can make. While blues are loud, bottoming out the spacebar is much louder. A kind of loudness I dislike.

I understand your predicament: the Cherry I just bought has an incredibly loud green switch in the spacebar. All the others switches in the board are blues, and the frighteningly loud CLICKK of the spacebar stands out from the noise a lot more than your little thud in the recording. It's annoying as hell. If I get to like the keyboard, I'll just swap the guts of the switch with some unused key to shut it up.

wtfux.. why does your cherry blue board sound so nice??

mine sounds like twice as loud from bottoming out.. makes me wonder if i should try a different cherry blue -.-

anyone who's had more than one cherry blue board from different companies know if the actual keyboard build itself can cause the board to be significantly louder/softer than others?

Man, all the sound clips/videos of the RK-9000 sound sexy. I think I'm gonna buy one to try it out.

Absolutely it makes a difference. Everything from what the switches are mounted on, to the overall build quality of the chassis.

For an analogy, it's like tapping a glass with a spoon. The tone of the note it gives off is going to differ dependant on the amount of liquid in the glass (what it's mounted to) or how thick the glass is (quality of the chassis).

Then of course there's the surrounding environment and whether the note will echo and reverberate. Which is dependant on what your keyboard is sitting on and what particular things your room is made from and everything in it.

The difference in the quality of the material the desktop is made out of will make a difference to the sound that is produced. The rigidity of the desk. Etcetera etcetera. I have a 1600mm wide desk that causes a duller thudding when bottoming out to a desk that is 980mm. The 980mm desk also has a lot more metal bracing and the metal causes a slight "clang" in the tone of a bottoming out note as opposed to the "thunk" of the wider wooden braced desk.

It's why you see in recording studios they'll have foam on the walls, but if they have desk mounted speakers, more often than not they'll use foam isolation pads to lift the speakers of the desk so the "muddying" of the sound the desk might make doesn't happen.

absolutely, different keycaps make different sound and feel when bottoming out as well. I totally felt like I've got a new board when put my new PBTs on my cherry blues. :)

Yes, keycaps change the sound quite significantly in my experience as well. The thicker black cherries are quieter than the flimsy filco keycaps.
Also, plate mounted boards are louder, etc.
It's a bit of a shame because I really like my filco, but plate mounting + thin keycaps make it louder than I'd like.
