Title: Anyone with a Compaq MX11800 (or any MX Brown board) want to give ghetto red's a go?
Post by: turbocharged on Fri, 04 February 2011, 18:06:11
I have a Cherry G80-11900 that I want to change to ghetto clears (black spring with brown stem). So I was hoping that someone with a Compaq MX11800 (or any other MX Brown board...the MX11800 is just the most convenient) would want to give the ghetto red switches (brown spring with black stem) a try.

So anyone interested in trading me you brown stems for my black stems?

I don't understand - does that mean we give you the keyboard (MX11800 or other w/ MX browns) and you mod both of them and then send it back modded?

If that's the case I might be interested but I don't currently have a brown board to do it so I'd have to order one.

Not what I initially meant, but if that gets it done, then sure...I'll mod both boards.

Cool, I'm interested then. You'd have to wait for me to get the board though, is that ok? PM me if you're down.

bump

Still looking to do this with someone. I am also willing to do the modification for you if you send me your keyboard.

I would also be willing to trade both stems and springs if you wanted to do a full conversion to MX Blacks.

I'm definitely interested. Just got my MX11800 in the mail yesterday!

Will there still be a tactile bump? I know the blacks are linear, is this the mech or the spring?? I'd still like the tactile bump, but I'd like the keys to be a little harder to depress. If that's the case then count me in :)

Kind of backwards from what I was originally talking about, but I am open to do that as well since I have so many extra black switches.

If you want to keep the tactility, but just increase resistance, then I would just swap your spring for the spring from one of my black switches. Then I would take your lighter spring and make the "ghetto reds" for myself.

They call the browns with the heavier (mx black) spring "ghetto clears" but really the tactile bump isn't the same as the clears, but he force will be similar.

Shoot me a pm if you still are interested.

Putting CHerry mx brown springs into a cherry mx black switch = ghetto red ???

How will that compare to Sixty's cherry mx ghetto red springs ??

If I'm not mistaken, sixty is selling the exact same springs.

Yes he is and I am in on the group buy...however there is no real eta on the GB and I wouldn't mind having 2 sets anyway.

Right now i am planning to convert cherry mx blacks into something else preferably.

Ghetto red's, Cherry mx brown or Cherry mx blues.

From what i've seen, Sixty's Ghetty red's seems the cheapest option. Since i already have blacks, all i'd need to to do is just replace the spring inside.

I'm willing to consider other options if the price is right :X (still bit skeptical about blues though because their less durable as dirt can get inside the switch)

PS: blacks aren't too bad when typing. I'm starting to get used to them. But i still feel holding down keys when moving around in say Counter strike is still not so pleasant compared to my previous Cherry mx browns.

I love cherry reds. They are definitely my favorite cherry switch.
