Title: bored - need netflix streaming suggestions
Post by: Voixdelion on Sun, 06 February 2011, 01:55:00
... or something that can be found online somewhere in free streaming form.

I've recently revisited my Batman addiction through the entire animated series and some of the animated features.  (Kevin Conroy is the BEST Batman ever - wish they'd made more of those.)  But now that I've run out of those I find slim pickins of stuff worth watching.  I'd like something really engaging or fun or witty or a combination of those (anything Joss Whedon will probably fit the bill if there's something I've missed that isn't Buffy, Angel, Serenity/Firefly, or Dr.H's Sing-along-blog.)

Just as a clue to my tastes, the recent/current TV shows I enjoy are: The Mentalist, Modern Family, CSI, Criminal Minds, Supernatural, Sanctuary, Smallville, V, Two and Half Men, Breaking Bad, Nurse Jackie, Legend of the Seeker, House, Dexter .  Films I can watch again and again include: Princess Bride, Men in Black, Usual Suspects, Snatch, Aliens, Independence Day,300, Dances with Wolves,  and can't remember the name of the one with Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner where they play a married couple of spies with a new baby - Undercover Blues, maybe?  (dunno why but I love that movie... I think it's the "Muerte" character that gets me)

Anybody got similar tastes that can recommend something?

Dr Who/Torchwood. Do I remember you saying you saw those?  True Blood?  Into Zombies or anime?  How about jdrama?  Check out animecrazy and dramacrazy.  That should kill a year or two for you if you haven't seen anything there before.

Spartacus, the Starz series was good. Also check out Better Off Ted if you like corporate satire.

Spartacus is doing their second season now which is a prequel, it's awesome too.  I wish they would have followed Spartacus in the revolt, but this is still pretty neat to see.  I love movies about gladiators. lol    It's so funny Iolaus is directing them too. lol

I heard the actor that played Spartacus is under going treatment for cancer. Which is why they went with a prequel. If all goes well we may have a third season that follows the revolt.

Firefly and Serenity. One of the best sci-fi shows I've ever seen, it was a crime to cancel it. Clever, witty, well-written, with interesting characters in a wacky sci-fi/western universe.

EDIT: Oh, you've already watched it. Hm... WATCH IT AGAIN

No, Troll Hunter is awesome, and not slow at all.  It's sort of like Blair Witch, but with payoff. Lots of it.  If you've ever been to Norway, or wanted to go you'll love it too.  I lived for 6 months in Norway and this movie is almost believable. lol

That film's shot with English actors, this is with Norwegian actors in Norwegian.

It's a different genre...Troll Hunter is like Predator, or Aliens, combined with Blair Witch.

This remark was utterly lost on me, but the rest of the stuff is a good place to start!  (Oddly enough, I do like animation, but generally can't get into the anime style of animation - I can't say precisely why but I just never could get to liking the way that so much of the art looked the same no matter what the plot.  The anime version of Batman in one of the anthologies was absolutely intolerable for me even though Conroy was voicing it  - it was like my visual and audio senses couldn't get in sync with each other at all.  I found it particularly disturbing that Bruce Wayne was suddenly looking like all the Hentai "boy love" clips I'd ever seen and actually had to stop watching it at that point.)

And funny you should mention the Firefly series as a revisit ...I just watched the Wonder Woman 2009 flick and recognized Mal's voice in a tipsy Steve Trevor  and had the same thought  =)

ha! I'd forgotten about that one - absolutely LOVE the theme song to that though.  Almost used it for my gymnastics floor routine back in the day, but in the end decided on "New Hampshire Hornpipe" instead. I think that was on a soundtrack from something too...

Interesting.  It's probably like being able to tell the difference between people in races you're not used to seeing which I've heard some people do have trouble with.  Every anime character is completely different.  I've never had a problem telling them apart.

You should probably start with something simple like Ghibli films, checkout Laputa, Nausicaa, or Spirited Away, or if you're into sci-fi start with macross the movie, then probably skip to Macross Frontier.  If you do both you should be able to see the vast difference between the character design styles in those.

If you're into action/realism another good series is Black Lagoon, which I always thought would make a great live action series.

If you're into comedy you can check out the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya which has become anime iconic fairly recently.  She gets bored like you. lol
