Just create a forum like DeskAuthority and **** up some free review keyboards.

No seriously, I was offered a sample by KBC and asked if I would like to review it, so now here it is. First impressions are very good. The thing is so small and light. I think it would literally fit into my pocket.

I was happy to see they used a full set of "default" keycaps, meaning no fancy offcenter stems or different sizes. The board is therefore fully compatible with all custom (Ducky/Filco/KBC/SP) keycap sets on the market right now.

I'll go back and do some real work, then start writing first impressions and stuff. Might publish a review later tonight still!

In the meantime, here is some nudity:

Also gives you a first idea on how the case construction works. Basically there is no top of the case, bezel free design. The PCB is screwed directly to the bottom, which thanks to the size makes for a surprisingly solid construction.

The problem I have and have had with this board is that it's pcb mounted switches, there are no fn keys, or arrows.  Does it have layers at all?  How do you use function keys?  Is there a numpad?

Is the pcb mounted switch noticeable on the sound or feel?  Is the board rigged for alps switches as well?

Arrow key design is very smart, function keys are there too. I'll mention all of that in detail in the full review.

There are a few ways to get in touch with these guys.

1. Join the KBC forum or QQ KBC discussion group (most of them are here) or YY discussion group.
2. Collect keyboards, make a website with your collections.
3. Become a distributor in EU/ America. (they are looking for enthusiasts, not merchants.)

That's all I can think of for now...
Title: KBC Poker - hands on

i might become a distrubutor communication won't be hard :P
and a webstore would be run by me :P

so step 3 would be able to be done.
and can somebody gimme the e-mail plox?

and i maybe become a distributor :P
very unlikely but still possible.

Title: KBC Poker - hands on
Post by: pang0011 on Fri, 11 February 2011, 19:35:30
This is not a HHKB killer, that goal is still a long way off.  KBC poker is just a RMB500-600 keyboard.

Very nice review, particularly the photos!  but what can't be seen in the review is the endurance of KBC.  I always thought development of 40%/60% is not a profit-making business (pls correct me if I am wrong), because such kind of keyboards is not for majority.  Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to salute to KBC internationally, for their repeated attempts to keep improving their keyboards.

I would say that the founding members of KBC are in the process of finding their ideal keyboard. When you are not easily satisfied and can't find one, you make your own keyboard.

For those that asked... it seems to be six key rollover over USB with no limitations to be found. I tried a bunch of combinations and they all pass. Rip-o-tine passed also.

Awesome review sixty! Thanks for that.

The review just confirmed my initial thoughts that I need to get one of these when they become widely available.
Title: KBC Poker - hands on
Post by: sixty on Sat, 12 February 2011, 03:42:37
Few more info I figured out this morning:

Special fn keys:

Web: 172 (0xAC)
Mute: 173 (0xAD)
Vol+: 175 (0xAF)
Vol-: 174 (0xAE)
Task: sends Ctrl+Shift+Esc
Cal: 183 (0xB7)

So even if you don't need the media keys, they can be remapped with AHK to something else, since they use the proper scancodes. Good stuff!
Title: KBC Poker - hands on
Post by: RiGS on Sat, 12 February 2011, 04:59:24
Is it possible to remap the fn key? Does the pcb use surface mount diodes? Does it have full nkro over ps/2?

FN key is hardware based, so no remapping. I get six key rollovers over USB with no blocking on any combination that I tried. There are no diodes in the switches, so I assume they are on the bottom of the PCB. I forgot to take pics of the bottom, might add them later.

Yeah, screw canned air though. I have a little compressor at home that I usually use when taking pictures, but I don't carry that around to the office (where I took the pics).

Also people might be surprised if they found out what the background/surface was that I took the pics on. If anyone figures it out I'll give them a free....uhhh.. keycap or something!

Hi guys, I'm a Chinese and happen to have the same hobit as you all: the keyboards!

I'll try to answer some questions with my best efforts, even though I haven't gotten the Poker, but I can forward your questions to them and get you back the answers.

KBC, it's the name of the company in Taiwan which produce this keyboard, the full name is:

THE (K)EY(B)OARD TO (C)HEER YOU UP

It's also the motto of the company: Make an enjoyable keyboard for us all.

PCB v1.1 and Holtek is not all that uncommon.  Holteks are pretty popular controllers.

And nobody wants a Version 1.0 PCB.

Font is identical to the Costar one though. Datacomp uses a different one for their pcbs.

I'm surprised you guys don't know. Actually its a big business in China. Many students seem to do it for some extra bucks.

Few examples:
http://taobaospree.com/
http://taobaofocus.com/
http://yoybuy.com/

http://www.myobook.net/

There are dozens, if not hundreds more of these services. Basically it works like:

2) agency orders it and charges 10% on top
3) everyone happy

The board is really easy to mod (assuming you know how to solder). That mod took maybe 20 minutes or something. The PCB is very neatly labelled and there are actually LED holes in the PCB for every single switch. A full backlit mod might be possible with some more hacking.

Thanks for the nice review. This is the perfect keyboard for me. I love the layout and the 'arrow lock' and 'esc lock' features. I hope the price is good and easy to get in the USA. I wish the fn key labels were not in such a bright white (the only bad thing I can say). I would love to hear an audio clip of some typing on this with blue switches since it doesn't have the standard metal back plate. Here I was thinking the wait for the leopold was stressful, the wait until April/March (if it comes out then) for this will seem like an eternity. Can't wait to get a blues switched one with some replacement key caps.

I have a few quick questions, does anybody know what the dark blue switch is? Also the green switches used for space bars are the same as regular blues, except slightly stiffer? Do they still have the same tactile bump and click of the blue?

Sold.

This will be my first mechanical keyboard. I was going to get either a Filco or the Rosewill but this beast is far too sexy to pass up.

Any pre-order list or group order or release date on it?

I've also decided to wait to make this my first mechanical board.
I have very shaky hands making soldering impossible, so if I don't like the switches I get I can always buy new switches for much cheaper than a new board. That plus the small size equals a win I think.

KBC 40 Poker full keyboard to change the red axis Services (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=9065559334) (This is what google translated)

Any idea what that is?  Do they change your existing Poker switches to reds?

In related news, we have been told the OEM information today. The keyboard will be available in red switches too from the looks of it. The price is still not final, but they are aiming for $100~110 for the foreign (read American) market.

Also the docs mention a heavier (600g) version with a steel plate. Whether or not that will be available with the normal version on launch, I have not been told yet.

isn't it just 499 RMB? (about 80 USD), where did the 100~110 number come from?

Also the KBC people said the retail version will come with PBT keycaps just like these first runs, you might want to edit that in your review sixty.
