Hello, I want to buy a FILCO Majestouch (one of those: http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_search.asp?SG=10040 ) and cant decide which MX Cherry i should choose.
I play alot of FPS (Quakelive, Counter Strike, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory) so from what i read the black ones should be the best. But then I also write alot (school, work,...) and therefor I also need the best MX Cherry for writing (which is brown/blue i belive). Additionally I think that the blue ones might be too loud for other people near me. I totally want the "click" sound.. but not too loud.. which brings me to brown (from what i read it is the same as the MX Cherry blue but without beeing so loud when typing).
So: I play FPS with alot of fast jumping and key pressing. At the same time i write alot and dont want to disturb other people but still want a little typical click sound. Black, Blue or Brown.. which one should i choose? :P
Also: Is it true that the different Cherry MX also have different LEDīs (Blue Cherry = Green LED, Black Cherry = Red LED, Brown Cherry = Blue LED) ?
Thanks

Of the three, brown will definitely give you the best compromise for typing and gaming.
-
Get a Filco with MX Blacks for gaming and a Topre or BS board for typing.
-
Just buy everything listed in my sig.
Except Taeyeon.

I was in the same boat as you a couple weeks ago. I finally decided on Browns after trying both Blues and Blacks. I like the blues and their sound is nice, not too loud for me or my girlfriend. The blacks are good for short periods of time but they don't have that 'bump' I wanted in a keyboard. I settled on browns as a compromise, and bought a Compaq MX11800 to try em out.
I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I tried it against my brother's U9BL and I like the feel of the Brown cherries on the MX11800 just as much, and considering it's some 15 years old and not very well built, that's saying something.
Now...about a week after I got the Compaq...I have two brown cherry tenkeyless on order :p Just have to wait for them to see which I like best, and sell the other on here.
Go for the Filco Tenkeyless MX Brown...that is definitely the best option, and I guarantee you will be happy with it!

IMO, the feel of brown cherries on an MX11800 is LOADS better than the ones on a Filco. I just don't like the feel of plate-mounted brown cherries. They make a weird ping sound and aren't as soft when you bottom out. They are also much louder.
-
I am using, and recommending brown switch for the first keyboard. Then you can try other switches just for fun.
For leds, there is a small chance it will short circuit the controller and make your keyboard unusable. Not recommmended.

I don't want the softness...and I want loudness ;)
We'll see exactly how I feel between the two when the Filco gets here. If I feel the same way as you do, there'll be a white Filco Tenkeyless for sale in the classifieds :p

so u guys cant decide either which one would be the best for me ? :D
about brown: i read they are the worst for gaming.. also the diagramm of them looks totally different.

If you have to make a compromise, then Ripster's absolutely right per your specifications. Cherry brown would be a most excellent choice for you.

We are in similar situations, I do a lot of typing/programming, and I play a huge amount of FPS gaming (I play competitive Counterstrike). I have all three, blacks (on a deck board) and blues and browns on the Filco tenkeyless.
I would have to say the browns are the best compromise. the blues are just too clicky, if you plan to type near people or if you use ventrilo/mumble/mohawk/teamspeak while gaming and you're making calls, your teammates will want to kill you.
And blacks... HORRIBLE for typing.
So, that's just my two cents.

They're certainly not the worst for gaming, they're a great gaming switch as well. Browns are a very safe first switch, they're good for gaming, good for typing, and very popular so they're easy to resell if you somehow don't like them. If you bottom out the keys while typing, they're a bit louder than a rubber dome, I find it's a very satisfying sound without being overly loud or annoying.
As for the diagram, browns have the activate and release point in nearly the same spot, the same as with a black. The two differences are browns have a slight "bump" in them, the tactile point, and browns are lighter, easier to press a key. I find blacks very tiring to type on for any length of time, and I love the tactile point on browns, it's just enough to keep me from accidentally pressing a key while I rest my finger on it, without making it overly hard to press.
As for blues, they're a great switch to type on, and honestly not bad for gaming either. The chart looks different than browns because the release point is higher up than the activation point. A small amount of people have a problem with this, but it's overhyped, most people have no issues. If it was a big deal, Razer wouldn't have released their "gaming" mechanical, the black widow, with only blues. I like the click of blues, but it can be a bit much for other people if you type fairly fast.
If you plan to do a decent amount of typing, get something with blues or browns. Browns are the safer choice, like I mentioned above, but don't be afraid to try out blues if you think you'd like them. I find even the "worst" cherry mx switches MILES ahead of any rubber dome for gaming.

I highly suggest you to sign up for this sinklist http://www.mrinterface.com/content/sinklist-stk-switch-try-keyboard (http://www.mrinterface.com/content/sinklist-stk-switch-try-keyboard) and try them all.
At least that is exactly what I going to do.
According to Mrinterface the shipping is around 10 in Europe.

Reds and clears are good for gaming as well...but you didn't mention them :\

He wants to buy a Filco.

Well i have to say i tried the blacks, browns and now im here with my blues... i really have to say all of these switches are better then a rubber dome, but for typing the best far before the other switches are the blues, i was disappointed by the browns very soft tactile and not exicting the blacks are cool but for me a bit to hard to press.....
and for gaming the blues are very good the blacks or good too but i really dont like the browns, so i would think go with the blues or just buy some g80-3000 and try you always can send them back or sign up for the sinklist...
but the blues are the best!^^

hmm someone rating the brown ones as the worst :S while other recommend them the most.
Well i guess i will still go for the brown ones with blue leds + get the blank key set and modify it to some kind of "otaku" version (maybe also getting the red esc key :P).
Still open for recommendations as the keyboards wont be in stock withing the next 1-2 weeks.
thanks

Does anyone actually like the cherry blacks? I've tried blue, and blacks and I cannot stand the blacks.

sixty loves the blacks, but only a weird version that he calls the "old one".

Black is definitely my key of choice right now..I'm eager to try reds though.

Blacks ftw.
