Title: Lego axles / Cherry stems?
Post by: Izza on Mon, 21 February 2011, 18:29:28
Just curious if anyone could do a comparison between Lego axles, and Cherry stems? I'm told there's a certain individual on the forums that eats/sleeps/breathes Lego, and might be able to help.

I'm also told to mention that no Legos will be harmed.

There is absolutely no one here like that. At all.

Lego axles are longer.  I'm sure of it.

Yes, but will a Lego axle fit properly into a Cherry-compatible keycap?

Or rather, will a Cherry keystem fit into one of these axle bushings:

I don't think so. If I remember correctly, the cherry stems are a bit... thinner in the plastic. Ie the bushing will go on, but not tightly enough to stay there.
But... I don't currently have a cherry board to try on, so this is really just speculation, I guess.

They don't fit. The lego axle plus shape is more stout and smaller in diameter. You would have to remove material to make it fit a keycap.

Cherry stems are somewhat thinner than the Lego axles.

Why are you asking?

I had this crazy idea that I could use them as a "readymade" for custom keycaps.

Ah well... at least I know the answer now. Thank you, Daniel, for the image.

The search continues...

Edit: Mega Bloks... those had axle pieces as well, didn't they?

The square 4 nub legos fit sort of snugly over a cherry stem, they dont quite fit into the switch though when pressed. I have an idea to do a ripster style transplant of cherry stems to some legos when I have the time. If noone else beats me to it *wink*

Well,  the rubber dome version has already been done.  Doesn't look like much fun to type on.
