I am waiting for the FC500R (in browns, not reds) to make it States-side.  In a way, it does look like they took styling cues from Unicomp on the lock light area which is a disappointment.  The tenkeyless version looks very nice, though, but I still need my numpad.

Priced right. Roughly $110.

It is now official: red switches are no longer rare or special.
I think this fad won't last for long.

It seems like everybody is going crazy to get one of those red switches.

That's because before you had to pay nearly $200 to get a board with them.

Of course, that still might be the case with Filco.

It might be true for those early "special" filcos, but I think red would cost the same eventually.

Also note the special filco has dual layered FR4 pcb.

It's fascinating how people are attracted to things that aren't mainstream, without any sort of objective assessment of the relative merits of the thing in question.

The aforementioned Leopold has the same PCB.

That's simply the nature of the hipster mentality.

And don't forget, it's only cool while it is rare. As soon as it becomes popular, they won't want it, since "everybody has one, and I'm *DIFFERENT*".

Unless it's an Apple product. Then it's always cool, because, well, Apple stuff is cool, whether I will use it or not, I just HAVE TO HAVE IT!

I'm a bad keyboard hipster. . . I bought the keyboard everyone else already has because I assume that means it's not terrible.

. . . unless, oh God, no! Filcos must have been the Hipster Cool-Kid Keyboard last year! Everyone has one because everyone thought they were going to be unique!

I'm a late-to-the-game bandwagon hopper *cries*

I will agree with that.  I would also say that a lack of knowledge plays into that as well.  Just knowing, for example, that pretty much all 'boards with plate-mounted Cherry feel basically the same, would one buy another plate-mounted Cherry 'board with roughly the same features?  I would hope not, but that hasn't stopped people (including myself once) from doing exactly that.

Is the Leopold FR-4?

I dunno if they all are, but the full size with reds is. The Leopold designer told me yesterday in email.

I think when the reds appear in volume people will realize how light they are and go "meh".

But browns are exactly as light as reds, right? And browns are very popular. I am typing this on browns and I like the lightness very much. I would love to try reds.

Yeah, Filcos were cool when you had to spend $200 to import them from Japan. Then everyone got their hands on one, an the magic wore off (along with the key legends)

If I were buying keyboards based solely on their PCBs I'd get a RealForce.  But that would be stupid.  Like buying a keyboard based on the size of their Toroid or the AWG of the USB cable.   Once again RealForce wins that battle.  At $99 versus $265/275 that's a lot for PCB bragging rights.

You're also buying a keyboard with some of the best legending on their caps and a capacitive switch that minimizes/eliminates some of the problems of Cherry switches (like "chattering").  Again, I'm not saying that the RF price is justified, but there is a reason to buy it instead of/in addition to a Leopold/Filco/Ducky.

Toroid?

Or Ferrite?
