When looking at random cherry boards, how do you tell which ones have mech switches and which ones don't? Or is that just the same 'ask the seller to pop off a key and look' as for which kind of mech key?

First part is correct, second part is wrong - linear mechanics over membrane. Some people say they're worse than rubber domes though - the force curve certainly is plenty non-intuitive, and the off-center friction (unless lubed) does not help matters.

also note, it a an "L" model.
it has lasered PBT keycaps (compatible with cherry mx switches).

Wow, you mean you can actually tell all that from just the model number?

Maybe someone should inform some other companies about how to do that, for example intel and nvidia.

On a more serious note, is there something somewhere that dissects the model number and tells you what the differences mean?

Are there other sets of boards that have useful model #'s?

Yes the model number actually contains all the info you'd need to know. I think its this one:

Amazing what you can learn just by browsing/searching through the wikipedia here.
Seriously, more people should take advantage of this before asking redundant questions. :)
