The package from Unicomp arrived to Slovenia a couple of days ago. Unfortunately Chuck, for a reason unknown to me, decided to send it through FedEx. This, in turn, meant I paid 40% more for postage. On top of that, the local FedEx office now expects me to pay VAT + 30€ for handling the customs procedure!!! What?!? I sure as hell am not going to use FedEx ever again as I'll end up paying 121€ for the bloody package on top of the actual value...
Sorry, I just had to vent somewhere..

Christ... USPS is perfectly good enough to get stuff out of the states.
30 EUR for handling customs is just outrageous :-(
-
VAT is normal practise, but handling cost is bit excessive...
-
My FedEx invoice was $50 for shipping and €10 for taking care of the customs. Still high, but nowhere near to what you have to pay.

And I was angry when EMS charged me $10 for "handling customs" even though there were no customs or VAT to pay (price on the box was specified below customs and VAT threshold). But €30? That's just unbelievable...

EMS is handled through your postal service so somewhere your postal service decided to charge you for something...

Tell me about it, services like FedEx, UPS, DHL plus customs are usually a bad, bad mix.
I once had to pay about €100 of taxes for $150 worth of stuff, this was with UPS.
They usually charge like hell for customs handling.

I've been tracking my package from EK via Fedex. It's supposed to be delivered today and is apparently on schedule. Look at it's route:
Destination: CHICAGO, IL
Mar 9, 2011 4:03 AM On FedEx vehicle for delivery LA GRANGE, IL
Mar 9, 2011 3:48 AM At local FedEx facility LA GRANGE, IL
Mar 8, 2011 11:30 PM Departed FedEx location CHICAGO, IL
Mar 8, 2011 3:29 PM Arrived at FedEx location CHICAGO, IL
So it arrived in Chicago yesterday, which was then delivered to a Fedex facility in a suburb 45 minutes away, to deliver back to me in Chicago. Fedex iz so smarts!

Internationally I've been told USPS is the way to go if you aren't on a tight deadline as the brokerage/customs fees are insane for UPS/DHL/et al even on top of the already bad fees.
At least, that's what all the internationals I've shipped into have told me.
-
Yeah well this was a lesson to me not to use FedEx ever again :P

your best bet for something like this is to try and get someone local who is a broker and have fed-ex hand it over to them at customs(then again you may end up paying a doc turnover fee) it all depends on what country you are in. I work for an international logisitics company and fed-ex absolutely rapes people if they are letting them clear the goods. DHL is 10x worse as 95% of their business is shipping for companies
