Title: Videos! Keyboards! Stuff You Already Know!
Post by: Armando Penblade on Wed, 09 March 2011, 22:54:25
So, I said I'd contribute back to this place in the end, so here's me starting to try to do so. You've got a lot of great audio clips and textual reviews (heck, I've even added one of those) around and about, and I know that there's a certain MrInterface posting around some good videos (actually, awesome videos), but I stole the Missus' webcam and went crazy (and most of the results are legal in 27 states!).

So, here are some vidjas about keyboards. It's nothing you expert guys haven't heard before maybe, but there are a lot of newbies like me around, too, so maybe this will be helpful to them!

A video review of the Filco Majestouch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yavzCfUE-1w&feature=feedlik)

A video comparison between Cherry Blues, Rubber Domes, and Scissor Switches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZM3DNVHgHM&feature=feedlik)

Replacing the Escape Key (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9Uo7rGn8I4&feature=feedlik)

Sorry if this isn't the best section, but there wasn't a videos section, and not all of these are reviews or audio, and I figured three posts would be even spammier :P

But yeah, I now know I like making Youtube videos and you poor sods are just my latest victims ;)

Pretty well done. When describing rubber domes, you got the mechanics wrong though. Usually there either is a contact pad underneath the rubber dome, which then is graphite coated and makes contact between two parts of the pad, or the dome pushes upon a membrane keyboard contact point, thus connecting traces on two membrane layers. Contact pads can be either on a circuit board or a membrane, with the latter being more common. Thus you'd probably find the usual flexible membranes in the Comfort Curve.

Oh, and wasn't the spacebar on the Filcos one that you can turn around?

It seems you are not that fat as your avatar suggests.
Btw Nice videos.

My avatar was chosen more for comedic effect than to flatter me, but then again, very few images flatter me ;). Thank you both for the kind words, too :)

And good point on the rubber domes bit; you may note that my video descriptions weren't terribly great. Taking keyboards apart and showing it all off would be a lot better/more helpful/more accurate, but I don't really feel up to disassembling all my peripherals at this stage ;)

And yeah, the Filco space bars are reversable. I am seriously considering it, although the possibility of screwing up a stabilizer and borking a $155 device is more than a little stressful. As I adjust my typing posture, the space thing is becoming less of an issue.

It is definitely worth reversing the spacebar.

I'm going to but haven't decided which board yet.  I may go w/the Leo tenkeyless or wait for the arrival of the Leo tenkey version coming soon.  I hope the full keyboard version will be offered at a comparable intro price.  But yeah, as you probably know by now, I'm thinking about Blues too, as I really like my Cusomizer and wanted something close in the Cherry variety to sample.  I like "Clack".

Blues were my first mechanical and they were way to loud for me. At first, my g/f didn't mind them, but eventually it drove her crazy. She even heard it from across the house. It sounds like this "dukkdukakudukadukkkadukakdukka space dyykkka udukkka dukkka dukaa"
