Title: Rubber domes with MX compatible keycaps?
Post by: Boutros on Thu, 10 March 2011, 22:22:56
A few years back I picked up old 101 key AT keyboard. It was nothing special, had no labelling or anything, all I cared about was that it had no windows key. Eventually I quit using it, but just yesterday I found it in a box and decided to take some keycaps off, just for the hell of it. I was pretty surprised to see that the stem on the switch looked almost exactly like an MX keycap. Not only that, but it was doubleshot! I took the keyboard apart and found the plate labeled Pucka Maxi-Switch. The cross indentation on the underside of the keycaps is not 100% identical to those on my filco keycaps, but they fit with no additional slop, it's just a little easier to remove the keycaps.

Anyone know about these keyboards? As far as I knew it was just a rubber dome, it doesn't look like cherry MYs or anything like that.

I think there was a lot of common-design being reused.  Why have to retool the keycaps when you switch from Cherry-style mechanicals to rubber domes, since you just need to make the right shape slider?

As another example, there are Monterrey-switch and rubber-dome switch caps which fit perfectly on ALPS switches.

BTW are G81 and G80 caps exactly compatible?

My Gateway AnyKey has double shot Cherry MX compatible keycaps. It's also made by Maxi Switch.

There's a lot of Alps-compatible rubber domes though.

G81 and G80 keycaps were exactly the same until 1998. Cherry then changed the keycaps to save some costs, resulting in some G81 keycaps to be not compatible with MX at all anymore.
