Title: Taking my model M to work

I was just told today that I could bring my own keyboard to work if I wanted to.  I am so tempted.  I guess nobody ever thought to ask before today because all of the computers and equipment is supplied by the company.  I am very afraid to take one of my model M's though, because there are enough people there who know what these are and I would be afraid that someone would steal it while I'm away from my desk.  Really, it only takes a minute.  There are also some hackers at work who would just love to have a model M of their own too.  I could see my board finding a new home inside a day.   We try to keep a safe working environment, but even so, I just don't trust that my model M keyboard would last.  

Oh, well!  I guess I'll just have to leave my favorite board at home.

get a cheap one-- or even a new Customizer.

I permaloaned one to a co-worker and have one for myself; both are used units which cost less than 10 bucks

install a gps tracking device inside your model m.

i wouldnt bring a model m to work.  its loudness may impact your eligibility to move up.

Our company has livecam, and our colleagues already know what a Filco is.

In my cubicle at work I have had the following mechanical keyboards in plain view since October:  Apple Extended 1, Dell AT101W, two Model Ms, and a Cherry G80-3000. Everyone knows what they are, and also that I'm a life member of the NRA. Nuff said!

You could always attach one of those glue-on Kensington lock dealies to the keyboard and lock it down to your desk.  You'd be stuck with that stupid thing glued on forever, though, but it would be harder to steal.

I've wondered myself why some of the nicer mech brands like Filco and especially Realforce don't incorporate a standard Kensington lock hole somewhere on the back side of the keyboard.  I figure it might interfere with how the case snaps together, but it sure would be nice to have.  Added at the factory it wouldn't look stupid and I figure a lot of cubicle-dwellers would make use of it right away in situations where they are bringing personal property to work.

It's not a model M, but you might think about getting a Keytronic 3600 or 3601.  Great feel for a rubber dome but they're only $20-$30 and probably won't be stolen by your office mates.   See if the Keytronic grows legs and go from there...

If someone steals it and uses it, remember - you'll be able to hear them.  Locating them, and subsequently exacting revenge, should be easy.
