After the horrible tragedy in Japan has claimed lives there will be another "after shock" felt in the limited or depleted supply of some Japanese products.
Companies that weren't directly in the Tsunami path could have still been affected by the quake. They could also have inventory warehoused or distribution channels in areas that were affected. We'll probably see a ripple effect and prices spike on some items as a result.
Topre wasn't in the direct path, hopefully they won't be affected.
EDIT: This thread was started before I realized the magnitude of the earthquake, tsunami and the chain of events since the tragedy begun. I had no idea the toll would unfold as it is today. Though my comments were very relevant and accurate, I can see how some could take offense if they thought I was making light of the far greater tragedy which is the lives it is affecting. That certainly wasn't my goal as anyone who knows me would understand. It was a thread made from a passing thought about supply of many things we enjoy.
I have many close family connections to Japan going back 30 years and thankfully none of my Japanese friends were harmed. I hope that is the same for any Japanese GH members and their families and friends.
For those who too quickly jump to conclusions and take offense easily... I'll defer to one of the greatest quotes I have heard:
"Assume positive intent." - Indra Nooyi
My prayers and thoughts are with those in Japan and I hope for the best and fastest recovery possible.
-
Sony closed some factories (and besides that Toyota, Nissan and Honda, too), if my information is right.
-
Chinese are still there? Maybe we some production will move to africa in the future, so distribution of production increases.
Still, this will affect prices, local demand might go down for hi-tech and then there is other effects...
-
Production in Japan, they have likely driven down part of energy production, so there might be some issues, also some runs gone wrong because the fluctuations in power-grid?
-
overall this is bad for everything, most of those companies prodcution lines have to keep moving or they start to lose money. At one point in time if the mercedes line shut down they were losing around a million dollars an hour, not to mention the impact this is going to have on freight. Tokyo is a very big hub for Asia especially for 5X (UPS) and FX (Fed Ex) A/F divisions and when one hub goes down its like dominoes because you then get pilots and planes stuck and it ****s everyones schedules up. So ya short answer availability is going to go down which means demands gets increased and lets hope prices do not go up!
-
It could affect Leopolds...Archisite is headquartered in Tokyo.
-
Something as simple as 1 chip or component plant could delay the iphone 5 for months and that would suck.
-
So we could expect Topre prices to increase even more?
If affirmative, those are not good news for The Keyboard Company.
-
10,000+ people dead, and people worry about keyboards and iPhones. Ho-hum.
-
"They have made us indifferent, to ourselves, to others, we are focused only on our own gain."
WAKE UP!
-
Yea, I was gonna say something about that too...this thread is kinda f-ed up in a way.
-
10,000+ people dead, and people worry about keyboards and iPhones. Ho-hum.
Long and short term effects on general economics is also worth discussing. Like how this will affect on other things, world economy, price of energy etc...
Japan is already very deep in debt, so how does this affect on nation in general. There is deaths now, but what about the rebuild period, how long will it last and what is the status after it?
-
I was also thinking about the structural damage to the country...at what level it is and all that...
-
10,000+ people dead, and people worry about keyboards and iPhones. Ho-hum.
speculating how many are dead now is stupid, trust me I doubt anyone here feels good about what happened in Japan but this is an electronics forum we are on. I didnt know we had to consult with the PC police before we discussed something like this which is relevant to me considering I work in the logistics industry and im sure is relevant to many other people aswell.
-
I am not even in the same zip code as PC, but the timing and responses to this thread are pretty gag-inducing. Besides, it's far too early to even get a grasp for what is still standing and what it will cost to rebuild it all, so any ideas or figures thrown around in this thread are useless speculation. I could pull some numbers out of a hat and they'd be just as relevant as anything anyone could suggest at this point.
I'm just glad there's a my iphone 5 might be delayed thread.
classy geekhack. ****ing top notch.

10,000+ people dead, and people worry about keyboards and iPhones. Ho-hum.
I think we all need to be ok with delays and possibly even cancellations.
An important question you need to ask yourself: What if you have $100+ "out there", waiting on an order, that you have to sacrifice, because information relevant to your order didn't survive the tragedy? How loud are you going to scream about it? Not much if at all, I hope.
You can throw out a "that sucks" but I'd hold up next to that, thousands/millions of families. They used to have a decent house and a yard. They may have lost one or more family members. If the boundaries defining their property are still well-defined, they have a pile of someone else's debris where everything they owned used to be.
A 65-year old man was found, 10 miles out in the ocean (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/13/japan-tsunami-survivor-shinkawa-rescued-fukushima), floating on the roof of his own house. Absorb that thought for a second. He rode that roof out there, hanging on for dear life. He was happy just to be found in time.
"That sucks...that used to be his house"

More information regarding how you can help Japan (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hnQ2ysZ8dDAV3IPXbBQNQnXaZLFA?docId=6694265f7abc4ef68fb7ac41f918b99b).

Buy electronics. I just bought a monitor and notbook with plenty of Japanese components. MOST of the component value of an iPad is Japanese. I recommend people buy those too.
And Toyotas. What a fiasco that was. It ended up not being a brake problem, (http://fastlane.dot.gov/2011/02/nhtsa-nasa-toyota-study-finds-no-electronic-causes-of-unintended-acceleration.html) just stupid americans.
Apple has too much american markup... Must be better deals out there...

Hi folks,
I urge everyone on GH to donate to Japan. There are over 2,462 active members on GeekHack. If we could donate anywhere from $50 - $200 each, that could reach nearly half a million $ in funds. But I urge you to donate whatever amount you are comfortable with.

Life goes on dudes. Oqsy, you already have your own thread.
Yeah, and that thread degenerated pretty quickly, and even without your help!
If I read the above statement correctly, it's wrong to post in more than one thread about similar subject matter... Let's apply that logic to Ripster's posts, and watch his post count dwindle.

I'm Catholic and I don't feel guilty on Sundays.
-
I feel guilty every day and I'm not religious.
-
I've found that when you don't take life for granted and try to do the right thing, there are few things to feel guilty about.
-
I'm young, I have still some time being "bad"...
So, in hurry to reach that magical 30k barrier? I realy hope its more than 15bit unsinged- or 16bit singed-integrer...

I feel guilty every time a European reminds me about what an ignorant American I am.
I am so thankful for those wonderfully brilliant people.

Happy to be any help. I'm not saying all americans are bad, but some leave something to hope for, but it's same all over the word...

Honestly, people are people. Every country on the planet has good bad and weird people some more then others. Pretty simple when you look at it that way

Maybe issue is that US has "most" and some of the loudest, also sometimes it looks like it's made to be a national sport...

Then there is France....
and India

This is easy to say coming from a country with a little over 5 million people
-
10,000+ people dead, and people worry about keyboards and iPhones. Ho-hum.
It's so easy to make judgements about people on a Keyboard Forum which you don't know about anything. Some people is very hypocrite and two-faced, take a look at yourselves before blaming people.
When your country is sending money to help Japan you're sending it too because it comes from your taxes so I'm helping them right now like I helped Haiti ņole you.
-
Lol. I don't.
-
I'd definitely feel guilty telling someone to do that for making fun of Americans.
Hmm, there is need of making fun of them? I think you do it well yourselves...
-
This is easy to say coming from a country with a little over 5 million people
Other issue is english, most people understand it...
My agenda is, USA isn't the god given good nation for others, as it might for themselves...
-
It's clear that's not your only issue.
-
It's clear that's not your only issue.
What else do I got on you then?
-
Oh not much...just your general opinion about Americans and my country in general, really.
I bet you've never even been here. Now who's ignorant?
-

No one does. He's a Euro Troll.
If we don't feed him, maybe he'll go back in his cave.

I blame your media and foreign politics. Atleast I think food is great in USA...

foreign politics, lol
As americans no matter what we do its not good enough or its bad, if we dont help someone we are called selfish if we do help someone we are considered meddlers

Being the only leading super-power at the moment has it disadvantages.
I don't know, I just have long history of being againts US...
-
Please Lpb45, we are the ignorant ones. Ekaros is the authority on everything American. Although he's never even been here, obviously HE knows what's best. He's a ****ing GENIUS on America.
P.S. Ekaros, yea our media is messed up, but so is everyone's. From your statements you obviously buy into the propaganda these outlets perpetuate. So does that really make you less ignorant than us?
*As Ekaros ponders this his head explodes*

I don't blame a sheep for being a sheep. I blame the slavemaster...
Wow I just realized I am a senior member/troll.

It looks like this thread is turning into a tragedy of its own...
Of course, boiling down someone else's grievous misfortune into a narrow perspective of how it will effect their productivity can seem insensitive and impersonal, but that's just life. Heck, banks and trading houses have analysts whose job it is to do this all day long.
The most widespread problem in Japan right now is power distribution; TEPCO, the largest power producer in Japan, was performing 3 hour rolling blackouts over large areas of Japan yesterday. Other than that, some trains are still not running, some highways and roads are closed indefinitely, and NRT had to cancel a lot of flights, so there will be a lot of delays in moving people and products.
According to CNN analysts, the area hit hardest by the tsunamis, Sendai, makes up only 1.7% of Japan's GDP, so if you like numbers, you can start there as a minimum. If power and transportation issues are not resolved quickly for the rest of Japan, the loss will be much greater and farther reaching.
As far as EK goes, the only delays I'm seeing are in transport of Made in Japan products that normally go out of Narita; Topres and accessories that are currently on backorder will be delayed a few days, a week, who knows. Stuff coming out of TW and Korea is not affected as long any Japanese based management is able to work; so far everything is OK.

From somewhere I read 25 Billion(US one) for cost of quakes, not including tsunami and power failure. It seems bit low, but not sure how Japanese structures are made and did the withstand it...
-
Well, that's good to know.

Earthquakes in Japan are not uncommon.

Kind of surprising that EK imports using A/F, and from the little I have heard 5X(UPS), AA, UA, and FX have cancelled freighters and PAX flights but should be running normally come monday. When a hub goes down it screws everything up because this was a major stopping point for UPS after it leaves alaska and I am unsure if the planes are capable of carrying enough fuel to get to other hubs. So pretty much everyone who services NRT & KIX (Osaka) are going to have some massive backlogs to sort through in the next couple of weeks.

EMBARGO ON SHIPMENTS TO/FROM TOKYO NARITA
Dear Valued Customer,
Since the severe earthquake in Japan last week, the disruption in both domestic and international logistics to, from and through Japan has been severe.
While shipments into Tokyo Haneda (HND) are now operating on a normal schedule and flights are resuming today at other airports, we must advise that a necessary embargo, effective immediately, will apply on shipments into Tokyo Narita (NRT) until Thursday,17 Mar (Japan Standard Time).
All inbound shipments into or transiting Tokyo Narita will be embargoed, except for mail, official urgent aid or humanitarian medical items
All shipments being trucked to NRT from inside Japan will be embargoed, including shipments transiting Japan's other gateway airports
We will keep you updated as new information becomes available. Please keep in mind that the embargo may be extended beyond this date due to fuel shortages, rolling power outages or other local issues.
We appreciate your continued cooperation and support as our teams in Japan seek to normalize operations.
-
Also, I have been hearing talk of shutting down airspace if there is a massive core meltdown at any of the nuclear facilities that are having problems which would effect not only Japan but Korea, China and Taiwan. I pray this does not happen, the Japanese have been through enough in the last few days.

I see some "minor" logistic issues here?
Also, this and previous picture puts things on scale. Those are likely 2 Unit, which is what 12 meters each(40 feet for non-metric)...

Apparently it's going to impact the availability of a LOT of things.
This is actually pretty scary (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-japan-business-20110315,0,2713425.story).
