Title: Cherry MX Red vs. Clear spring swapping (For RiGS)
Post by: keyboardlover on Sat, 12 March 2011, 13:23:06
RiGS had asked me before if I had tried swapping springs between my clears and reds before, and I replied that I hadn't.

Nope.

Well, today I decided to swap out the clear switches on the arrow keys of KL Kustom Keyboard 1 (http://geekhack.org/picture.php?albumid=114&pictureid=675) for reds. I think reds just feel better for arrow keys. Anywho, whilst doing this I decided to try the spring swap. Here were my findings:

Clear switch with red spring:
Overall nice; they feel lighter but with the tactile bump. They feel more smooth than clears. However, they makes a small metallic sound when you release, which could be annoying whilst typing.

Red switch with clear spring:
REALLY nice! Linear, but heavier than reds. How I would imagine a cherry black SHOULD feel. I definitely prefer the feel of this one.

Thanks for the update.
Koreans tend to use lighter aftermarket springs (around 74,6g to buttom out) with cherry blacks.
I will try to contact a local spring manufacturer.

Do you prefer the modded red over the original one?

Yep, those are basically the same.

Hard to say after only trying the one switch...I'd have to try the whole home row modded to say for sure...

However if you were to ask me what my first thought to that question is, it'd be "no".

Do the clear witches with red springs ever have a rebound problem? ClickClack had tried brown springs(which we're saying are the same?), and reported that sometimes there wasn't enough force to push the clears back up.

I didn't notice that.

I modded one row of a keypad using clears with brown springs about a year ago, the goal being to make something with a tad more tactility than a brown switch, but I found the results undesirable; I didn't experience any "stuck" switches, though it's seemingly possible.

My conclusion was that clear keystems have a roughness to them that is comfortably mitigated by the stronger stock springs; it slows and eases the keystem travel into the sharp point of tactility. However, when the brown springs were combined with the clear keystems, that initial guiding resistance was missing, and your finger slams right into a grainy, abrupt point of tactility that slows the keystroke unpleasantly. The whole point of a lightweight spring is lost on the clear keystem in my opinion.

That would explain why browns have a lighter tactile bump then.

Does anyone remember the specifics on clear vs. black springs? Those weren't the same, were they?

I just dug out one of my boards with blacks (all old), certainly rather acceptable if a little heavier than I'd like.

So, if I understand correctly, cherry MX Black switches + brown/red/blue springs = ghetto cherry reds?

SirClickAlot made a comparison between the ghetto red and the original one.
He couldn't notice any difference.

Our wiki has a lot of great information, but it's a major pain in the ass to navigate.

I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Looking to swap my red to clears (non tactical, non clicky) Thanks
