Title: Double shot blue return
Post by: DrunkenDonut on Tue, 15 March 2011, 14:01:08
I'm splitting this from the main double shot thread so it doesn't get lost.

The proposal is for a US Standard shaped Return key ("Enter" on the Filco tenkeyless), white text on blue. Similar to some IBM keyboards.

Since I don't actually have one to compare to, I'm just going to propose using BDH. It seems not too light, not too dark. The other light blue stuff on the list is using BFJ. Opinions on colour? I'm planning to use it on an otherwise black/dark keyboard so both colours would work well. The text would be more visible on the darker blue of course.

If simply voting in with the  code qty # and description will get this moving, then I'm going to use BLUERET, as it seems to be unused at the moment. I'll wait on some feedback on colour though.

Took a couple of pictures but this one, although terribly blurry, appears to be the most color accurate. Blue enter taken from a used Thinkpad, stacked on top of my Filco.

I think BDH is good, BO might be a tad better?

Thanks for the reference. BO does seem to be a closer match. Kind of subtle, but it depends on which pic of the colours samples I'm looking at.

Okay, the vote is in! Hopefully this gets across okay. We'll see when 7bit returns I guess.

Vote for BLUERET if you want in! I've started it off with 3 keys. :)

*crosses fingers that everything will be fine*

I'll take some more pictures with this setup tomorrow, it actually looks really good!

I like it.  Do we have any estimate on cost?  Even a rough one is fine.

too blue

Ack! That's pretty bright / vibrant. Do you know what colour code that is? It's hard to choose based on the two pics of the colour samples I saw (in the round 3 thread, pg. 140, and in the clear blanks thread). Based on those pics, BO seems to be a good choice.

If anything, we'll try to error on the dark side rather than have a really bright enter key. I think it would look better on the dull side.

What about the cost?

Cost unknown at this point. I'll assume it'll be similar to similar keys of low quantity. It's a standard Return key, with standard markings, rather than a custom design so it shouldn't be too shocking.

A few more days and 7bit should be able to respond.

$1.5 per key if 25 are produced.

Do you want Return of RETURN? Should it be centered of off-center?

Or do you want <---' Enter ?

My IBM just has:
<--'

It is centered.  How about that?

The key as in manfaux's picture would be great (<--' Enter).

I'm fine with whatever everyone else wants.  We better hurry though.

Cool. In summary, it is US standard straight return with (<--' Enter) left aligned, white on blue (BO colour).  $1.50 ea. if 25 or more. It's already in the vote list as BLUERET.

Oh ****, you added ANOTHER key for me to buy?

Why do you hate me having money geekhack?

Will it be the color from Ripster's photo or manfaux's?

I'm in for two.

It didn't make it to $1.50, but $2.50/key is good. I was worried we'd be looking at $4/key on this.

BO is the colour chosen.

Since nobody seems to have the actual colour samples in hand to match up to a key, BO was chosen from the two pictures of the samples floating around in GH. I would love to have a perfect match up, but it's going to be a surprise. :(

Post by: DrunkenDonut on Thu, 24 March 2011, 16:33:00
Strike that. According to 7bit, the BO is close to ripster's pic - too blue. Why does this have to be so difficult? I thought this would be much quicker to choose a colour. :(

Seeing as we're not getting a match anyway, BFR is the next candidate, seeing as the thickness of the keys seems to brighten things up. BFR is a lot less eye-popping and less blue in the sample pics so I'm going with it.

The (hopefully) final summary -> * COLOUR IS BFR *

If you have objections, speak now or forever hold your piece (of plastic).

Can you post a photo of the samples so we know which colors you're talking about?

Whatever you guys think.  I want it to look good, but can't help decide since I'm partly color blind. :D

Well... looking at my Thinkpad the closest color would be a very, very dark version of RCJ.  It's more of a dark purple than blue, but since SP doesn't seem to have anything purple I agree that BFR is probably the closest they have, assuming that fssbzz's picture of the color samples is white balanced properly.

Also, the layout of the "<--' Enter" is only on the Thinkpad keyboard.  The regular Lenovo USB keyboard has a different text layout.

Thinkpad:
<--' Enter

IBM/Lenovo desktop keyboard:
Enter
<--'

This site has a picture of the Lenovo keyboard I also have:
http://ma.wishmesh.com/2011/02/ibm-lenovo-usb-prefered-pro-keyboard-unboxing-images/

His pictures may be over exposed or over saturated.  The purple isn't that bright on mine, it's more dull and dark.  Or maybe it does look that bright under direct sunlight.

I'm partial to the Thinkpad layout, which is the same as the Round 1 double shots, except on the round 1 doubleshots, there is no space between the arrow and Enter, whereas there is a noticable space between the arrow and Enter on a Thinkpad Enter.

Round 1 Doubleshot:
<--'Enter

Thinkpad:
<--' Enter

http://www.thinkpads.com/2009/08/31/finally-photos-of-new-thinkpad-usb-trackpoint-keyboard/

The extra space between the arrow and the text would be nice because it looks a bit bunched up on the Round 1 DS Enter key.  Regardless, I'm already in for 2.

The problem is verifying the color accuracy of this stuff is nearly impossible. Between the color accuracy of the camera, lighting conditions, monitor accuracy (not great on a TN, worse if not calibrated), the colors we all see might be very different from what they actually are.

Someone who owns the color things from SP needs to do a direct comparison.

I don't know.

My T61P's enter looks most like BFK or BDH. However I haven't had my U2311H professionally calibrated (manually by someone else or via a color sensor like a Spyder) and I'm slightly blue-yellow colorblind (never enough to fail a test on a PC or confuse them in real life, but when a doctor shows me the images on paper I fail at least one page of the test).

So my opinion may not be worth a lot.

It'd be nice if someone had the pantone color sheets to compare and get a Pantone color to ask SP about, or more easily, if someone with a Thinkpad had the color samples from SP.

I've got a T61p also, but I'm looking at the pictures on a Dell 2709W on my main PC that was calibrated with a Spyder 3 about a year ago.  Both BFK and BDH are too blue and light colored in both pictures.

RCS is pink on my monitor.
