This test is developed with the aim of measuring your Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The test is Culture Fair, i.e. it minimises the effect of cultural variables, such as language, mathematics, etc. The test is based on logic, but is furthermore designed to test learning capability, memory, innovative thinking and the ability to simultaneously address several problems.

The test measures the general intelligence - g.

The calculation of IQ is based on answers from more than 250,000 people.

I'm not telling LoL... If I'm not mistaken, 115 is above average.
You're mom should be proud of you ;-)

This one doesn't factor your age. But the older you get the better it is.

Good boy ;-)

Now try the test and let see if you beat 115... hehehehehe.

BTW I was not expecting people to write their score. 160 or 20000 for that matter is not harder to write.
People can write anything they want. This was not the point.

Do it for yourself, I think it is a good challenge.

I didn't know this test until yesterday. I'm on the short list for a new job. The hiring company asked us do psychometric tests. One of the tests was very similar to this one. They will compile the results of all the tests and select what they think is the best candiate for the job.

There is no such thing as Culture Fair tests.  Everybody knows Asians are smarter.  It's because they spend lots of time in the Library.

The table below is for the standard Raven... Not the Advanced (like above) scores are a bit higher than what you get with the Advanced.

I thought you were born with an IQ, you can't really change it.  Unless  this (http://www.davidstuff.com/humor/buffalo.htm) is true. My father and I are both believers in this theory, to the point where we had it framed in the bathroom.

Oh, and averaging this score with previous scores I have gotten, my IQ is around 116.

Curious, what type of job are you up for that would employ a tool like this in the interview process?  The last job I got "quizzed" on before getting hired was bartending at a Chinese restaurant in Fanueil Hall.  I thought it interesting that of all the bars I applied to after getting my certification, there were at least 20, they were were the only ones that made me prove it on a written test and oral questioning of drink recipies. (For some reason, it didn't surprise me that owners that would do this were Chinese. Lily reminded me quite a bit of my own mom.  Maybe that didn't hurt with me getting hired either.  It remains one of the best jobs I ever had in terms of stable cash flow and pleasant working environment - The only thing was I'd always have that stench of fried oil on my clothes when I came home,)

I'd love to know what kind of place actually wants to hire people based on IQ results (even if it is only a small factor in the decision - most places just want to know what have you done or what tasks you can perform - thinking doesn't often come up as a requisite skill)

The table is interesting.  Smart but unhappy Asians.  Dumb but happy Islanders.

Sounds about right.

I was just thinking about the following this morning:

IF ignorance is bliss, and knowledge is power then that kinda supports the whole garden of eden thing doesn't it?

...Is there an actual answer to the manhole cover question?  I'd never wondered about that, but now I'm curious if there was a necessity or benefit to making them round (other than the hole they cover being round, that is...)

I've seen this type of test before - The International High IQ Society uses one like it (exclusively, maybe?) and I tried out their sample test once  - they call theirs "Gigi" but I've forgotten what the letters signify - I'll try this one and see if the numbers come out the same or different from that sample test

Microsoft used to ask why Manhole covers are round in their job interviews.

Did they? This question is easy to answer if you had thought it before (or at least Its logical in my book; and if you haven't thought about it: good luck): if they were square you could actully lose the manhole cover into the manhole itself: as its round there is no way you could make it into it.

Besides, whats USA guys always making jokes of Canada? I'm curious os to how it started ;)

Not in the interview process... Next step after all the interviews and been short listed.

"Raven’s APM score indicates a candidate’s potential for success in such high-level positions as executive, director, general manager, or equivalent high-level technical or professional positions within an organization. These positions typically require high levels of clear and accurate thinking, problem identification, holistic situation assessment, and evaluation of tentative solutions. The APM score also can be used for developmental purposes in occupational and advanced educational settings."

I'd say I fall somewhere in the bold statement ;-)

Nor do I.  They're a measure of how well you do on the test, nothing more.  There are more factors than 'intelligence', however that's defined for the purposes of the test (which may not be designed to reflect anything else except the test, regardless of what the small/large print states).  It's possible to rehearse the types of questions found in IQ tests and improve your results through familiarity but still be unable to tie shoelaces, boil an egg, or function usefully in society.

I also suspect that being likeable is probably not a test parameter.

also does the time taken to answer the questions affect the score? I would have thought so but it says finishing early doesn't affect your score... but i still finished 20 minutes early lol

I think it is not necessary to be smart to achieve great things in life.
It is all about taking action persistently, and apply self-discipline when your mind try to stop you.
Probably that's the reason I like the movie Forest Gump so much.

I agree to a certain extend. This specific test is challenging your logic, creative thinking, your short term memory and your ability to solve concurrent problems. It also measures your ability to learn quickly.

It gives absolutely no indication of your emotional intelligence (often referred as EQ). Researches tend to demonstrate that you need a balance of both. Some types of work take advantage either of one or the other or both. That's another story.

This test is relatively short. Some people are slower than other and by no means dummer. They will resolve excessively complex problems if you give them the time to think about it.

I'm a half decent chess player. One of the friends I like to play with almost always beat me when we play blitzes. But he can't beat me if we take the clock out. He would be a better candidate to make difficult calls within 10 seconds. I would be a better candidate if I have 10minutes to make the same calls.

The Raven test has been used for the past 60 years. It's statistically proven that the 9 year old kid who just did 130 will be very successful academically. It doesn't mean that the one who did 80 will fail but the odds are against him/her.

Oh and if you are the smartest dyslexic on earth… You will still fail this test.

LoL. I SEE what you mean.

Nope didn't read Blink, but just googled it.

"It's a book about rapid cognition, about the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye. When you meet someone for the first time, or walk into a house you are thinking of buying, or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions. Well, "Blink" is a book about those two seconds, because I think those instant conclusions that we reach are really powerful and really important and, occasionally, really good."

Few EI books also talk about something similar. I don't recall if they call it Rapid cognition. But the brain uses different neural paths when it comes to decisions involving survival. It's much faster than reflexes. It was a critical function back in the old days where split seconds made the difference between life and death. This decision process works by approximation and guestimate based on past experiences (usually painful). Today's context is much less dramatic. You can also refer it as first impression.

@ ripster - I recently came to the conclusion that on the internet it's about appearing smarter, not necessarily being smarter. If you can hold your cool, reason through and use big words you can often impress people into thinking you are a lot smarter than you really are.

'IQ' from what I can tell, is total bull****.

When I was 8 I had an IQ of 135 which put me in the top 10% of smartest smarters in the UK... fast-forward to when I was 16 and it dropped to 120(ish)... which means that throughout my education and special needs support I actually got dumber... (My IQ test was redone when I was 8 to make sure it wasn't a mistake or anything)... and then I was told by the person doing it that IQ tests can be effected by age, how well you slept, if your stressed... basically almost anything and everything... which IMO makes them totally meaningless and of no value.

Hmmm... this seems to prove that most keyboard enthusiasts have good pattern recognition and extrapolation. That's mostly what this test seems to be looking for.

I've always done well in IQ tests, but not so much in actual higher level education, since (in most institutions) it caters to a specific way of thinking (incremental, verbal) and I am not built that way (more global and visual). I could get by if I put extra effort into converting the material myself, but some subjects I just couldn't do this with (some areas of mathematics in particular).

Well that was a fun spatial intelligence and random luck measurement test.

I remember enjoying the actual raven's progressive matricies test as a kid.

My mother has a masters' degree in Gifted education, so we always got to try out the new version of the tests.

I think one has to keep in mind the limitations of the IQ test, and the concept of IQ as a whole. This goes beyond even Howard Gardener's Multiple intelligences (A theory that might help explain Baldgye's various scores)

The most common IQ test is probably the Stanford-Binet. I took the wechsler as a kid, which has it's limitations (it's possible to "max out" sections, leaving no upper bound to the IQ estimation.)

I don't put much stock in these online IQ tests (or in IQ in general, come to think of it), but they can be fun.

I got a 96.

It must due to lack of sleep/diet/anything. Ask my mother! I'm smart!  >:D

way to necro-bump!

Once upon a time, in high school, I scored 140 on an IQ test, and since that day I've made it a point never to do IQ tests.
