The best keyboard I've ever typed on was a Cherry at a UPS store. I'm fairly certain it was a G80 because it looked just like this:

That was about a year ago and I haven't been able to find out what kind of magical switch I was typing on. So far, I've tried Cherry blacks and Cherry browns; neither seems right. The browns are much too light and the tactile bump is almost non-existent. The blacks are linear, which these definitely weren't.
The feel was tactile non-clicky. The tactile part was very noticeable. Really, it kinda felt like a rubber dome, but the best rubber dome ever. I am wondering whether it could be the Cherry clear. It was significantly firmer than the browns. Does anyone have more knowledge of what types of switches are found in this board?

Normally MX11900s come equipped with blacks. A special order board could have anything though, including clears (which would fit your description).
-
sounds like cherry clear
-
Some people think vintage MXs feel different than newly shipping MXs.
Can't be worlds though. My '04 Czech G80 with clears sounds different to the '96 sample due to the thin keycaps, but the feel is the same. Similarly, a well-used '02 sample with blacks (another Czech one, IIRC) had lightened up noticeably in the alphanumeric area but other than that felt pretty normal compared to vintage G80s with blacks.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll try to acquire a board with clears. I just missed one in the classified section and the guy there said the only other one he know of was a $169 Deck. Anyone know of a cheap board with clears?

So, I got the G80-8113HRBUS-2 and I've been typing on it for a couple of days, but I'm sure this isn't the one. Does that narrow it down to rubber dome? I've tried browns, blacks, and clears, but my memory of the board is closes to a rubber dome. Am I a heretic?

Need to try topre.
-
I figured that would come next. I should sell the three cherry boards I have and use that money to try a Topre.
-
However, without a doubt the board you initially typed on did NOT have Topres. No Cherry boards have ever been sold with Topre switches. It's quite possible that the one you typed on before did have very high quality rubber domes.

Really, it kinda felt like a rubber dome, but the best rubber dome ever.
I think if that's the kind of tactility and overall feel you liked then you can't really go wrong with a topre!

Yeah, I just bought a 103U-UW from EK. I was spending too much time reading about keyboards, so I figured that was a good way to make myself stop looking. Hopefully I'll love it and stop obsessing. :)

Great choice! I think you'll love it.
