I'm looking for a new Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless Red. Where is the best place to buy one for USA delivery? I see the 104 board at Amazon, but no Tenkeyless. From keyboardco it is over $200!

Well, I just don't know. I think I am used to a lot of force. I'm currently using a Logitech UltraX Media keyboard, kinda like a laptop, and I have to push pretty hard. The MX Red has been described as typing on air. That sounds like trouble for me. I am a programmer and don't really type paragraphs of English text.

typing on air doesn't require 45cN of force, so no, whoever described typing on red is like typing on air clearly never use one or have no clue about what he's talking about.

I just did a test on my Logitech UltraX Media keyboard (scissor switch laptop like) ... it took 15 nickels to get the key to buckle!!! I think I need MX Black switches to learn on.

i've received mine this morning (from keyboardco) and i'm typing with it now.
first impressions compared to the brown 'version 1' i was using just before:
-switches feeling: very good, mutch better than the browns, for me. mainly due to the (obvious) superior smoothness. even if, i think that the filco keycaps seems to increase the sense of roughness, in some ways (maybe some resonance inside the caps). i say that after switching the brown ones with a double shot set i had.
-sound: much much better. in this field a really huge difference. much lower pitched sound when bottoming out, even gently. i think the new pcb design play a big role in this, as the switches are more mechanically matched with the pcb itself. the sound is similar to a cherry with pcb mounted switches.

Anyway to get Amazon to ship to Canada? I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a red switch filco.
It appears even though amazon is getting their Filcos from TheKeyboardCo it's much more expensive going through them.

i prefer to write something when i think is relevant, in some ways at least.
this said, i confirm that in my opinion the filco caps enhance the noise of the moving switch, almost like a 'cavern', in some ways...
i have also a raptor gaming k1 (blacks) and the switches are silk-sounded
but as the browns after a few days of hard typing seemed to 'burn-in' (and probably my ears too) i'll wait, before putting on it the double shot set. anyway this keyboard remains a joy to type on.

Last time I checked Armygroup had them and was slightly cheaper they also ship faster then keyboardco. They are in the WW shopping wiki under taiwan and there is a few threads of exactly how to buy from them.

I only found a tenkeyless with reds but with chinese lettering, couldn't find an english tenkeyless :(.

hmm i wanted to buy the brown ones (typing alot and playing alot of fps games.. quakelive,ET,...) but now it seems like the mx red are way better :S and more expensive.

imho they are more expensive just for now, as it's just a matter of availability.
i'm not updated but it's easy to see that cherry spent 0 working hours to develop them, apart from the color...
anyway we'll see...

My MX-reds on my new Filco feel heavier than the MX-Brown on my Noppoo. I'm sure they are.
Anyone made the rip-o-meter thingy on these 2 for a comparison?

imho, it could be a matter of perception, as the browns seems to (or do...) require more intial energy to move, but less to bottom out.
also the keycaps and the chassis, (seen here as resonator) could make a difference. basically when you hear a louder noise, you (or your brain) think that the switch is heavier.
you could try to put some noppoo caps on the filco and vice-versa
btw, i put the double shot set i had on the filco with reds, and definitely a lighter sensation. ...but just a perception.

That's correct.
However the spring holds the object in place against gravity.
In order to press the switch you have to depress the spring, and it has already depressed by a certain point because of the weight of the keycap, hence you need to apply less force to actuate the switch.

i don't know if they are the same, and i don't have a precise way to weight a double shot vs a 'plain' one, anyway my double shot is not from a cherry but from an old tvs gold.
but what could be the difference in weight? enough to pre-push the spring in an appreciable quantity?
imho the more the weight of the cap, but i'd say also the more 'dampened' layer of the double shots, and the less propagation of the noise.
i have also a new set from a tvs gold, dye-subbed i think, and the feeling is again of a more smooth action, compared from the filco's.
and here the weight can't be so different.
but of course, 'feeling' is not a standard measure...

The difference in weight is 3g versus .8g for a Filco (see the Key Reference Wiki). I still contend inertial effects are more relevant here. This can be confirmed by a simple test of typing with you lying on the floor and the keyboard duct taped to the bottom of the keyboard tray.

Well, that test would change the circumstance of the experiment in your favour, because in that case the force of gravity would act against the force of your finger.
Putting an US Nickel on the top of the keycap is more relevant experiment here.

I tried putting some weight (a US Quarter and a cell phone battery) on my Esc key, and I really couldn't tell the difference between the weighted cap and the "naked" cap. What I could feel was a lack of tactility that gave the sensation of a lighter press, but after A/B-ing for a bit, it was more of an illusion than anything. I think the weights and forces are so low here that neither weight nor inertia play enough of a role. The density of the interface between your finger and the switch stem seems to have a larger effect, and that's very easy to observe.

In physics, mechanical work is the amount of energy transferred by a force acting through a distance.
Since the distance is shortened by the compressed spring, it takes less work to activate the switch.

Unfortunately I do not have any Japanese coins at my house to do this experiment, but I'm sure it takes less coin to activate the 45cn Cherry switch with the Filco keycap on top then with the Cherry keycap.

yesterday evening i had some spare time, so as i wanted to lower the clackity sound of the keys, i opened up the casing (a little safe...).
it turned out that a great amount of noise came from the casing itself, which is quite intuitive, ok.
then i hard dampened the lower casing, using multiple 'balls' of grey tack (or blue tack, which is known by hi-fi modders) so that when i put back the pcb, i had to press it to 'deform the balls'.
at the end i leaved off the top casing (it does not impact very much the look, imho) and i must say the feeling now is completely different. much quieter, and the keypresses feel lighter.
a brief try (to give an idea) could be to type directly on the naked pcb, with a dampening material underneath.

Of course, as Ripster said, the weight differences we're discussing here are pretty insignificant.

It's not that linear. There is also static and dynamic friction.
