Title: "Deep dish" keys.
Post by: Mr. Perfect on Fri, 25 March 2011, 00:57:45
I've recently picked up a G80-8113, and the "deep dish" F and J keys are surprisingly nice. The high side walls on the left and right edges of the keys seem to cradle your finger, so there's no doubt that you're centered on the key. Are there any key cap sets similar to these for the entire board? Spherical caps maybe?

I have a set of vintage-y doubleshot numpad keys I took off of an old POS board. I'll try to remember to make some pics later.

looking at the shape of my fingertips i can't help thinking spherical keycaps would be the best, but i don't think they look as good as cylindrical/sculpted keycaps.

The spherical keys do look pretty old school, but if they feel as nice as these keys then I'm going old school. Pictures would be great if you have time.

When did they say the couldn't do double shot shericals? The data sheets on their website list both the DSA (http://www.solutionsinplastic.com/pdfs/DSAFamily.pdf) Medium Profile, Spherical Touch Area, non-Sculptured Layout and the SA (http://www.solutionsinplastic.com/pdfs/SAFamily.pdf) High Profile, Spherical Touch Area, Sculptured Layout families as being available in two shot molding. The 86 Medium Profile, Spherical Touch Area, non-Sculptured Layout key family is unknown, they didn't post a data sheet on them.

Someone over there didn't read the manual!

I vote for NO MORE keycap group buys. Seriously, I don't have enough keyboards for all these keys and my wallet's hurtin'!

I thought it was more they presented a hand-waving answer along the lines of 'we COULD do them if you backed up a dumptruck full of fresh $50 notes, but..."

Personally, I'd rather have sphericals than cylindricals; it might justify me giving the G80 one more keycap change.

I still think someone should badger Signature Plastics a bit more about why they couldn't do some doubleshot sphericals.

They clearly have the tooling.  The Orange and Panic keys used to have Cherry MX stems.

Freshly shot by SP, I guess there was some kind of misunderstanding in the communications. They were unable to do 2.25 and 2.75 width DSA double shots though. It seems they don't even have the molds to do those widths in ABS plastic at all. Apparently they need different molds for ABS and PBT due to different material characteristics. The ABS keys come out just a tad too wide when molded in dies meant for PBT.

You can probably have some too. I don't know if my price quote ended up very favorously, but they were not obscenely expensive at least. Pop off a quote to SP (http://keycapsdirect.com/contact.php) yourself. wider keys are more expensive to get in small amounts. I can offer blank ones (http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=309924&postcount=6) for the price I paid (~$2.50 each).
