Title: Realforce 86UB 45g weighted
Post by: ynih on Wed, 30 March 2011, 01:46:45
Price Lowered

After exchanging PMs and some careful consideration, I am lowering the price of this board to its final price of $SOLD, shipped.  For local pickup-ers, I'll throw in a new click clack key (price was $20 when I bought it), but for shipping, it'll be just the board.

Dear all,

I am parting ways with my lightly used Realforce 86UB keyboard.  I have carefully modded the keys so the A-Z section are all an even 45g.  The Tab, Left Shift, Left Control, Left Windows key, Left Alt are also all 45g.  I believe the 1-0 keys are also 45g as well.

I did so by swapping the non-45g keys with the Up/Down/Left/Right, and Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause Break, and Insert/Delete/Home/End/Pgup/PgDn cluster.

Most people know the reasons why: the keys "a a a a a" and "; ; ; ; ; " keep on repeating when your fingers are resting on the home row.  I took about an hour in the whole process and did so during the second week after I got the board.  Also to note is that none of the keys are particular shiny.

My 2cents on my Realforce 86UB 45g modded board, the HHKB Pro 2 45g board, and a Realforce 103UB 55g board..  I've owned the HHKB Pro 2 for a few months and I did a side-by-side comparison and the one thing I'd have to say is the HHKB boards are very light, and despite their keys rated at 45g, they are actually measured around 60-65g, and that's with a *bump* on the table.  The 103UB 55g's were simply too hard for me, as their pop break near the very top and the travel distance feels very short.  If you're thinking about a HHKB Pro2 because of the 45g switches, I'd say the Realforce boards are definitely a step up (in my opinion).  They are plate mounted, they are more heavy and the construction feels very sturdy.  Also, their backspace is in the position of regular keyboards, not where the "black slash" key is at.

I'm asking for $260 shipped and insured via UPS Ground, or $250 for Local pickup (Cash, or you can Paypal me before meeting up.)  I'm in the Irvine area of Southern California.  Also, the original Realforce "wanna scratch" key puller, Caps/Control key switch, and a red ESC key is included.  PM me if interested.

Pictures can be found below.  Note: these pictures are NOT doctored in anyway, just taken in my make-shift studio and cropped.  No post-processing adjustments were made.  So what you see is what you get.

Did you swap the 40g key as well? (2,W,S,X,9,O,L,.)

Yes, I did.  If you ever want to open it up, you can see that I labeled the bottom corner of the keys with 35g and 40g.  If you have this board and have the guts to do so yourself, I highly recommend you do.  :)

You had to swap the F-keys as well.

I never touched the F-keys.  There are plenty of keys on the right hand side cluster (12 in total), swapping out the non-45G keys (which are Q,A,Z & W,S,X & O,L,P & 1,2,9 & 0 keys).  I think the one of the keys (like right Control) was swapped with the last 0 key at the top.

So you kept the (./;'[]-=) 30g.

That would be correct.  Please refer to my original post as I only mention the A-Z and 1-0 section as being modded to 45g.

just a question about the pics, i'm an absolute noob in photography.

What kind of lighting do you use ?
It's very white and nice for technical and basic purpose.

thanks

I think for photography lessons you should ask Ripster, I drool at all his flash flooded pics.

Mine is much more affordable. They are simple 250Watt SV incandescent 3500k (I think?) rated bulbs.  I used a gray card to get the White balance correct in camera and put a $5 white cloth folded twice on a table beneath the keyboard. This way, I won't have to do any post processing.

Ok the bulb is the answer with the white balance

Ripster's pics are fine nice too, and in a more artistic way i loved the group buy shamrok picture.

Thanks

No, the white balance correction in the camera is the key...  Most point-and-shoot folks don't bother with that, although most point and shoot cameras are capable of setting custom WB.  If doing it in-camera it needs to be set up BEFORE the pictures you're interested in are taken.

I (and probably most anyone shooting dSLR) do white balance in my RAW converter.  As long as there's a "white" target exposed properly anywhere in the frame it can (and should) be adjusted after the fact.
