Title: Band-modded Filco brown...meh...
Post by: Surly73 on Wed, 30 March 2011, 17:51:16
So my 3/16" "medium" dental bands showed up yesterday.  I got around to pulling the main alpha keys of my Filco brown tenkeyless and applying the bands.  I stopped several times through the process to compare what was going on while there were larges parts of the keyboard in both conditions.

I was surprised that any kind of firm tap on the keys doesn't sound any different whether banded or not.  If bottomed out gently there was a slight difference.  If I "fake typed" by drumming my fingers in a modded vs. un-modded area the difference was quite clear.

I also found it interesting that when comparing neighbouring keys, one modded one original, I couldn't see a difference in key stroke length in any way.  At speed or finger drumming, however, and the band-modded keys felts weird.  The tactile "hump" (normally not easily perceived my me) now felt too close to the bottoming out point.  Again, strange since I couldn't see or feel the difference between individual keys on close inspection.

Anyways, I finished the entire main typing area of the board and I'll see what I think.  I definitely prefer the feel without the bands, to be honest.  Although seemingly barely measureable the difference in key stroke can be felt "at speed" and it isn't like the board suddenly became Topre-like with the mod.
