Title: Optimization on the Dvorak lefty layout.
Post by: Popkeymon on Thu, 31 March 2011, 19:53:30
I use DSK for work and Dvorak lefty for fun. During my daily use of the single hand layout, I found that the home row position is not well posited and I have to spread my fingers so awkwardly to reach, let say, the shift + F by pressing the shift by my index and f by my pinkie which is not an ergonomic act to do.

In addition, my pinkie should not be as flexible as my index while Dr Dvorak places the relatively Common letter C K B G right under the pinkie while the Z which seldom be pressed on the index territory.

I would suggest the home position for left hand typing done on the qwerty-asdf rather than on the middle. It makes tying combo such as shift+letter ctrl+ letter etc much more easier.

The layout is design to type at the left side of the keyboard. The features include:

(1) easy access to "shift" key (where you should type at the beginning of  each sentence)
(2) more rational arrangement for high frequency letters such as G C K and B
(3) reduce the workload of pinkie
(4) more rational number and symbol arrange
(5) painless transition between the original layout to the optimized layout

this post was composed by the optimized layout without retraining.

I have swapped the q and ` for more rational arrangement.

the layout seems like this:

row 1: q p f m l b j ` 1 2 3 4 5
row 2: y u r s o k , - 6 7 8 9
row 3: d t h e a c . ' \ / = 0
row 4: w g n i z v x ; [ ]

I am trying to further optimize this layout as there are still room to excel:

(1) the backspace and enter is still too far from the main entry area.
(2) the symbol should be arrange near the enter and shift key for easy input.
(3) a mirrored right handed layout for flexible input task

the solution of the layout

(1) download keytweak
(2) change the caplock to enter
(3) change the tab to backspace
(4) change the backspace to tab

reboot the computer and the changes will apply to all.
