Title: mechanical keyboard cover/ skin
Post by: brkim1324 on Mon, 18 April 2011, 07:31:14
I recently purchased my first mechanical keyboard ! :)
It's daskeyboard ultimate, and I am loving it.
I'm loving it so much that I always wanna keep it good as new..
but I know since it's a keyboard, it's going to wear out as time goes on...

Anybody know any good keyboard skin that fits for the DasKeyboard?

And also...
Does the tactile feel wear off later on?
and the keycaps too? Like getting shiny

My keyboard already got some scratches on the upper right T_T so sad...
I was actually gonna EMA it because of the cosmetic damages..
But I couldn't just keep using rubber dome keyboards even I just played
lots of SC2 just hours ago with it... It just feels.. horrible :(

I have a similiar question. The thing is I have the same keyboard, but I would like to be able to redesign or switch out my "5" key. Do someone know if it is possible to buy a new key - color does not matter - that would fit on this keyboard in that location? Or perhaps a guide on how you can design your own keys?

Best regards,
Davoud

Keyboard skin not recommended. You'll kill the typing feel.

Tactility will wear off a bit over time. Keycap will shine even sooner. Should you be paranoid? No. Is it normal to be paranoid? Yes. Why? Coz it's still brand new!

I was thinking the same, making something like a mod on it, and have an special sticker like on top of the board, not the keys though

I wonder, if I will color the key my self. Is there some kind of a special paint or pre thing i need to do with the key?

I remember long time ago, when I was a child and my dad had an internet coffe here, He got many cheap keyboards, since they would get heavy use, he thought about trying to maintain the cheap keycaps lettering was important, and so, just after he bought em, he got a small bottle of this liquid that girls use to put on their fingernails that has no color, its just for protection of the nails, and avoid nails to get so easily broken(sorry, I`m a natural spanish speaker so I don't know the english name for it), and painted the part where the lettering was on. Obviusly, the keys get shinny after it, and always shine, but that cover was enouth so that he wouldn't have to apply another layer of it, and lasted more than the actual life of the rubber dome keyboard. Perhaps this isn't as bad as it sounds... I don't really know.

We should have a sticky for keyboard skins.

Pros  - Keep your keyboard clean even when you type
Cons - Feels horrible.

I order one once to try, I still use it as a cover when the keyboard is not in use. But I take it off when needed.

If you ever wear off your keys, you can still buy good replacement for it.

Enjoy your keyboard as it is.

That decal look is essentially what the fingernail polish did.

You put fingernail polish on your keys?
(Nice job on the G... very even all around it)

My Helvetica $18 DealExtreme Scissor will probably outlast a uncoated Leopold key but not as long as the HHKB.  That is good since the HHKB costs $275 it should.

In my experience, both yes and no, it will probably last as good as the fingernail, but I have a similar keyboard, and although the lettering won't get worn and banish with us, it will get eventually dirty and turn into a less shinny color, more like brown. This fingernail polish I'm talking about is so 'thick' if the term is valid, that no matter how dirty and sweaty hands you have, the lettering won't get brown, BUT it is way more 'shinier' than your picture. To image how shinny it gets, try to think of a keycap covered in some body oil, the one that you seen on those boobs in that porn clip, but it gets really hard.
