Title: Finally got my first IBM Model M - 1390131
Post by: NeeGo on Tue, 03 May 2011, 11:30:24
It's ehhh I don't know how to explain it but coming from my Futaba switch (read that it's similar to White APLS), the IBM doesn't have as fast of a feedback/response going back up? I guess from reading countless post about the older Model M, it's firmer or something. Also I noticed that the keys are two-piece, a lot taller, and looks more spaced out from each other than my BSR keyboard so that might have something to do with it.

1) Anyone know what I mean? I think if you run your fingers gently over all the keys without pressing them, you hear a deeper, hollow sound and whatever is causing that sound is causing my keyboard to feel funny when typing on it.

2) Did it take a while for you guys to get used to this keyboard? I just got the keyboard yesterday and really haven't had the time to gel with it so maybe I'll get used to it.

3) How the heck do you remove the back screws that are deeper in the hole? My socket is too fat to fit through so I'm guessing I have to buy a skinnier one.

Thanks Ripster; didn't know such thing would fall under "modification" (well, I guess it makes sense). You guys can safely ignore the first two points in my OP as I am already feeling much more comfortable with the keyboard after one day of real usage.

Model Ms are just like any other keyboard, just need to get used to it. Model Ms seem to have a reputation among less experienced mech keyboard users as being the end all, be all ultimate typing experience. After trying a few different switches, can't say I agree with that. I love my Model M but I don't think it's "far and away" the best keyboard. On the otherhand I know there are some very experienced users on this forum who love their Model M too so I guess it's just different strokes for different folks.

Yeah, I never tried any of the other popular keyboards that you guys use and probably never will due to their prices and stores around here not having them. Oh well, as long as it's not rubber dome, I'm happy with what I have.
