Title: Dell AT102W keys
Post by: domin8r on Wed, 04 May 2011, 17:59:50
Hi,

I just acquired an Dell AT102W for a few bucks.. the switches take a bit getting used to (compared to my other keyboard with white alps). But the main thing is that this keyboard has a funky layout.. Lot's of keys are different, seems like an scandinavian version or something with keys like Ö, Å, etc.

It's fine when I type without looking (which works 90% of the time) but would prefer to have replacement keys for the "weird keys". Is there an easy way to acquire keys for this keyboard? :)

Yes. Buy another Dell keyboard.

Hehe, that kinda falls into the category "things I had already thought about" ;)

Wait a sec, you live right where that kind of layout is used exactly on purpose. Why do you even want to change it? I guess you're a foreigner there or something?

Im pretty sure you can find someone here that will take those alps keys off your hands, especially since they are in a scandinavian layout. If you want I can send you a German set of keys as a trade...but then, what layout do you need?^^

Based on the way he described stuff in the OP, I'd say he wants US Standard.

You're right, US standard is definite favorite :)

I'd be happy to trade them with someone.. specifically this part confuses me at times:

(this is a crappy shot of the whole set of keys btw: http://domin8r.com/random_stuff/keyboard.jpg )

Looks Scandinavian to me, I don't even know how to pronounce an Å :D

Keep the keys and then be all "leet" when you come back to the US with your funky keyboard.

That's the FIN/SWE layout. Å = O, by the way.

As it turns out I've got a Model M coming my way (my first).. so assuming I'll love that I'll probably just get rid of the AT102W alltogether :)

Take it from me, having multiple keyboards isn't a bad idea. :-)

Sometimes I bust out different keyboards depending on my mood, they're all pretty different from each other. Especially the Dell you have and the Model M, they're really different types of beasts.

Yeah I understand what you mean.. have a keyboard with white alps at work. Had a week off and now typing on it again.. a total difference from the Dell!

Totally. And buckling springs are totally different from both black and white alps so that's why I'd probably recommend you just keep all of em. Of the keyboards I have, I have favorites and could rank em, but I wouldn't like to say one is objectively better than the other, sometimes it's just fun to try different boards from time to time. Maybe I have a problem, but then again if you're on this site reading this, I'm pretty sure you do too. :-)
