Title: Do you lockup your Topre at work?
Post by: Keylamity on Tue, 10 May 2011, 22:42:17
I mean sure, I can see leaving a Unicomp or even a Filco sitting there unguarded, but you Topre people with one at work, do you lock it your drawer like I do?  I probably just need to relax, but there'd be no self-forgiveness if I showed up the next morning and it was gone.

Try to remember that nobody else that's going to stumble across it knows it's worth more than $15

I've had candy stolen off my desk, but none of my tech goodies.

Forget dieting or exercise.  Get a quality board at work and really improve your life.

Yeah, no one would know what it was. The only possible ways it could go missing is if you have another geek or some dolt spills something into it and helpfully throws it out and gets you a new Logitech from IT.

Hey, do those Topre have a Kensington lock (http://us.kensington.com/html/17687.html) on them by any chance? Would be a cool mod.

I checked.  They don't.

You should be always on guard and careful.

If buglars are geekhackers, even your home are not safe for your Topre/Filco keyboard.

I leave them connected to my terminal.
Makes people less likely to even want to use them though.

But then again, I share a computer lab with 5 other students and they all seem not to know the true value of the beast itself.

I do most of my typing at work so that's where I want my best board. My office is locked and I feel comfortable leaving it on the keyboard tray.  I have to lug my laptop back and forth (per company policy) so I really don't want to be dragging a keyboard as well.

Seems weird that you'd consider leaving a Filco out but not a Topre. If I didn't trust my co-workers enough to hide ~$300 worth of anything I'd sure as hell still lock up ~$150 worth, haha. Hell if I didn't trust them to not steal **** from my desk I wouldn't leave a Snickers laying around...

I've been thinking for a while that the premium mech keyboard makers should put a Kensington slot somewhere on the case.  If I didn't have a locking office I'd be more concerned.  Of course if I didn't have a locking office I'd even be concerned about my model M.  I might not mind attaching an aftermarket Kensington lock point to a model M but I would rather not deface a Topre in that way.

But how do you prevent people from rubbing their "junks" on your keyboard and mouse? I've heard  story of a guy at work who put somebody's mouse down his pants and put it back on the desk.

I have to share my desk with the Night Shift guy. In a way, I don't really wanna know what the guy's doing to my keyb+mouse. *shrugs*

Will soon have to post a WTB Tenkeyless brown in the Classified forum after reading more of this thread. At least, I have a desk that I can lock stuff in.

Nah.  You need a key card to get into my office and there's a pretty limited pool of people who have them.  If any of my stuff turns up missing I can just get an entry log and figure out where to look.

What if they just went in and rubbed their junks on your stuff?? :)

I'm not terribly worried about that either.

I doubt anybody I work with will ever bother how much my keyboards is worth.
I always lock up my keyboards anyway. It's not worth the risk especially when I work in an open office concept environment.

I have both my tenkeyless Filcos on my desk at work and my coworkers know exactly how much they cost (because 2 of them have their own). We have a pretty good office (~20 people) and I'm not worried about anyone stealing a keyboard. If they wanted one they'd buy it themselves. The company gives us all brand new laptops of our choosing (for our tenure here, not to own) and they're just sitting on the desks in the open the whole time. I'd wager they're a much larger target.

In addition to theft, I can see other coworkers switching out our keyboard with their's thinking that it was the company's property. Like a coworker switching out the better the chair.

I'm far too trusting, so I probably would just leave it lying there.  Hell I don't even lock my car.

Where is Filco, Topre and Ducky factory?

Hopefully there will be no securities there, so we can visit there as a tourist group...shh...

Of course, Unicomp factory is not a bad option either.

Your keyboards are valuable to you - but probably not to your colleagues.  They're too specialised for a casual thief to sell at anything like their value.

I leave 7 or 8 keyboards around my desk (like the variety)... I'm confident that they're safe (but to be fair I work with nice people as well).

If someone was going to abuse your 'boards - I suspect it's happened already.

Sueng, your scenario seems the most likely to me.
