I see that the Majestouch 2 is available on Amazon currently, and I had been considering getting the Das Professional (Brown switches), but a lot of people around here seem to have some sort of love affair with Filco, is there any strong reason for that?
One of the threads I saw seemed to make it sound as if previous Das keyboards maybe had some more wobble to keys and lower build quality, but it seems people say that is no longer the case?
Anyway, if anyone has anything to say regarding the decision between the 2 it would be greatly appreciated :)
(first mechanical btw, so probably going to be in love with either choice)

I got Das Ultimate for my first mechanical keyboard :) I was very happy with it until few weeks later, the keyboard seem to have many cosmetic problem issues. I uploaded my complaint here earlier. Everythings fine except the cosmetic problem. One's the texture is very scratch sensitive. Das will get minor scratches even with cleaned with wet towel. White filming keep stacking up.
So I changed to Filco and those problems are gone.
BUT in the typing wise, Das felt better to me. It feels very stiff, firm, and smooth at the same time. If only that cosmetic damage wasn't there, I would have kept it.
Filco has been legendary since the mech. boom. It always had one of the best qualities on the market and lived with its great brand name.
I'd want to say you won't go wrong with any of them, but personally, I'd recommend Filco :)

i have the same problem Bucky , atm i m favoring Das Professional Silent a bit over Filco Majestouch 2 cuz it s about half the price of the Filco and i noticed a few people complained the key paint wares off after some time ,i want to find out how much you can raise both keyboards as if it s something i hate it s a keyboard that you cant keep at a 20-25 degree angle. Also i dont understand why they dont add a wristpad :(

Yea I have gone back and forth on the decision a few times. For me the price is the same (I have a $100 gift card for amazon so I cannot get the student discount for buying from DK). I tihnk it is just a cognitive dissonance scenario, I ordered the Das, then saw the Majestouch 2 on Amazon for $140 ish and thought maybe I should cancel the Das order. I think I am sticking with the Das decision, either way I am psyched to finally get a mechanical board :)

I'm on a DK ultimate right now. You can actually raise the keyboard quite a bit. As far as build quality, they're comparable, with the Filco edging out the DK by just a little bit. But, the DK has the USB hub, which is definitely nice. But the DK most definitely gets really dirty. That shiny plastic is a dust/print magnet.

Basically cost is what comes into play. Das has the student discount so you can pick it up cheap, at about 105ish. Filco has a little better quality, prestige of owning a filco :) and no usb ports.

Well, I have the same das keyboard you ordered. I've had it for around 6 weeks - and I don't have any "white film" that brkim had on his. I haven't tried out the USB ports - but my own fault for not connecting it yet. I do think the Filco and similar keyboards are crazy for not having usb ports or any other functionality - usually not even media keys/etc. For how expensive these are, we should expect a bit more from our keyboards.
Well, that's my opinion... :)

Das versus Filco review here.
Brkim1324 is pretty picky about cosmetic issues. He returned a HHKB2 for some wobbly keys and key molding crud.
I'm not as picky and consider the build quality pretty similar with looks being a personal choice.
XD woo you remember me Ripster! lol
I just want to get the most out of how much I spent. If the product is new, and still has build quality issues, I think I want to get different product for a better quality. My cheap logitech didn't have any cosmetic problems so I thought over $100 keyboards obviously shouldn't have those problems. I think it's just luck and the room temperature, atmosphere that causes that white filming problem.

Yup you are right! I liked that USB ports on Das, although it could have been elsewhere than on the left, but I had that white filming constnatly! So I had to replace my keyboard :(
I hope Filco just makes another mech keyboard that has that media functions such as USB ports.. not replacing the original design but like as separate series, like Master Ninja~ that can do more than typing~ XD

i think i am the only one here that doesn't like filcos. their build quality doesnt impress me
-
To each their own, but just to be sure: you're not saying the DK build quality is better? Surely you jest...
-
ducky g2 is better imo definately. haven't owned any other duckys.
got any grapes?
-
Ducky G2 > Filco? Can't say as I've heard that before. Mostly I hear that Ducky quality is quite sub-par.
But then again, that could just be the Ripster effect...
-
Quack quack, Ducky G2 is pretty nice. But then again it's limited edition with PBT. Don't know about other Duckies.

Can't we all just get along?

All hail Ripster! XD
Ripster will guide thru the dangerous wilderness to the ultimate keyboard!
-
You are absolutely right, brkim - they should have placed the usb ports on the top right edge of the keyboard rather than on the right side. I guess that's one thing the xArmor keyboard got right...

Yup. I saw a laptop once that had fans on the right side. Then so many ppl complained their hands getting hot when using mouse! XD

First off, welcome to GeekHack.
I was in the same situation you are, with the exception that I picked filco, too bad I'll be getting it in like 2 or 3 weeks.
Still, I think Das is a really good choice :)

I'm really into that, but he just got there on saturday, so ... kinda hard xD

After I am hooked on mechanical maybe I will need one for work. I would love it if the Filco Majestouch 2 came out in some colors, those look pretty slick. Justifying an extra $150 for a work computer might be tough though!

I can't comment on the Filco 2 (thinking of getting one myself), but I'm currently using a Das S with blues and love it.. wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one if I didn't want my second keyboard to be tenkeyless. As for the build quality, I know Ripster has said the Das and Filco are very similar (or at least comparable IIRC). Can't go wrong with either one.
Though it appears that buying the Majestouch grants you membership to the elitist club of Filco owners on these boards........ HMMM
