Title: Keycap question
Post by: Titmouse on Thu, 26 May 2011, 11:38:33
I'm switching to the Colemak layout. The lettering on the keycaps are really distracting, especially since the software I use for work has a lot of shortcuts other than ctrl-c ctrl-v. I'm thinking of trying the Leopold "otaku" browns because that is the only blank keyboard I could find that I can just order in the US. I do have a question about the keycaps. If I later decided to try another brand, say Filco, can I move all the caps, space and all, to the Filco with no problem? I'm sure this is a very simple question. But I'm new to the mechanical board thing, and only have one board so I cannot compare keycaps from different boards.

Also, any suggestion of how I can get decent blank keycaps or keyboard for not too much money would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

leopold spacebar is a rebel, they are the same color so should be no problem

If I remember correctly, every single key should work fine from Filco to Leopold except the space bar. Either that, or it was every key but the stabilized ones.

Edit: Looks like I got ninja'd.

All of the keys except the space bar are basically the same.

I like the KBC PBTs (not sure if they do blanks).

My spacebar is only a LITTLE bit shiny after two months.

I don't really care about the spacebar, I'm more curious as to how the rest of the keys hold up.

Thanks, guys. Looks like the Leopold space bar might be a problem. Does it at least have the same shape as the Filco one, so that it does look and feel weird with the rest of the keys?

you could always change the keys if you want, and just leave the spacebar on the Leopold and the Filco respectively, anyways they both don't have lettering or anything on, so, there's no real reason to change them is it?

PS: if you get the leopold, and then the blank filco keycaps, then just use the leopold spacebar, in the end won't be much of a difference, and perhaps you get to sell the spacebar here.
