Hello all,
I'm new to the forums, but have been lurking for a little while now. I purchased a Das keyboard (cherry brown) and got it in a few days ago. The keys are already starting to show wear and it's a pet peeve of mine. The glossy finish looks nice, but I find myself wiping it off constantly which can get a little bit irritating at times.
So I'm debating now between exchanging it for the ultimate version, or buying the Filco Ninja (104 layout).
I've read on the forums about some ping noises coming from the filco and that so far is the only thing that has got my attention. The other thing is that since it's going to be purchased overseas, there isn't really going to be any "warranty" for it if it comes with some dead microswitches or other issues.
The reason I'm so attracted to the Ninja isn't just because of the e-peen, it's because I really love the front labeled keys, because like I stated before, I'm have a pet peeve with worn down letters on keys.
The other thing I read is that filco keycaps have a tendency to get imprinted by finger nails? I just need some clarification on all of this if someone wouldn't mind replying to this thread.
I hope you guys can help me make my decision.
Thanks a lot!

Why not buy some engraved PBT and not worry about wear?
Also I used to have a Das that pinged, it's not like only Filcos show signs of it.

Cherry MX switches are made of metal, and they sometimes consonate when you bottom up or type fast. You are the PING composer.
Filco brown is recommended. For wear, glossy and tear, you can always buy a keycap set.

Because it would be more convenient and cost effective for me to just buy the filco for 159.99 rather than to supplement my current das with engraved.
I actually don't mind the shining type of wear at all. What I do mind is the letters fading and making the keys look out of place.

wlcm 2 gh.
Gotta buy them all.
-
Thanks for the replies. I think I might go with the Ninja. Any other words of advice from you guys?
Also, I see the Filco's come USB, do they include a usb to ps2 adapter?

Oh....you don't catch em all?

Yes.

I was searching on google and found that Filco keys have coating that wear off and end up looking hideous http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/797880-edit-filco-tenkeyless-vs-das-ultimate-3.html#post10321622
I know Filco probably uses that coating to protect the pad print, do any of you know if that's still present on the Ninja keycaps?
-
unless you type on the front, shouldn't be noticable.
just buy them all.
im gonna look up the pokerap videos
-
just like the wings i have to go pick up.
they will most likely cook them wrong
-
they charge extra for extra ranch
dam buffalo wild wings. bunch of commies

Dude, get it. I have 3 MJ2's and they are all awesome.

Yeah? I see that you also have a Das. What is your opinion of how they stack up against each other
Like I said, I am still debating between getting the ninja or just exchanging my professional model for the ultimate.
-
Well, aside from the shiny key issue (all of the keys in the alpha cluster of my Das are practically mirror-finished), the quality is comparable. I personally feel the Filcos have a slight edge on quality, but it's very slight. I also prefer more rectangular keyboards, so the bump on the DK to accomodate the USB port kinda irks me, but then again, it's a USB port. So that kinda makes up for it.
As far as the keys getting shiny, I've noticed that they both (meaning Filco and Das Keyboard) will start to get shiny after a few weeks of use. I'm on my keyboard all the freakin time, so YMMV. Apparently if you want to minimize the shininess issue, you should get a set of PBT replacement keycaps. I'm still waiting on mine, so I can't comment on whether that's true or not. One thing I will say though is that I've noticed that my red board's caps wear significantly slower than my blue board did or my brown board is. It may have something to do with the lightness of the switch and that I'm not pressing down on the cap as hard.
As far as noise goes, I don't have any pinging issues with my boards, except for my left control key on my brown tenkeyless, and even then I have to concentrate to hear it.
Overall, both boards are built like tanks. You can't go wrong with either one. But I can guarantee this: You'll want another one soon :)
-
If the keys were not shiny after months of use, how keycaps could be sold? No good for economy.
-
I have a Ninja, but haven't suffered any pinging. I don't doubt the people that say they do...luck of the draw I guess. I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. While I agree it shouldn't happen on a keyboard that costs this much, Amazon is good about returns and exchanges. I can't help you with the shiny key problem, though. I can tell you that it is awesome to type on, once you get used to it.
Oh, and while the Ninja probably does have e-peen associated, I couldn't really care less. I just didn't want my letters wearing off and figured $10 made that worth it. I almost didn't even get that because I didn't want to pay extra for special keys and what not, but in the end it was only $10 and may make it easier to resell someday.
-
I'm just wondering if I should go with the tenkeyless version or the standard size. I don't use the numpad that much outside of calculator or excel work, but I already graduated so I don't use it much anymore. The novelty of these mini-keyboards is intriguing me though.
-
Yeah, do it Backward_Pawn :P
Edit: Looks like ninja's are evading your request.
-
Can one of you guys break the Ninja secrecy code, pull a key, put it under bright light, and see if it looks like this?
You are looking for water spot like marks which indicate the key has been coated.
I'll take a look when I switch out my Windows keys. For now I have to go to bed, I have work in the morning. Oh and I just noticed I do have some ping on my quotation mark key. Its certainly not bad enough that I would return the board, but its there :( That's the only key I've found though.
-
Why wouldn't the Ninja be coated though? I'd imagine that the entire keycap would be coated regardless of the fact that only the sides are printed. Isn't this the case with regular majestouches?

Just popped my Ctrl key off and held it under a light. Couldn't see anything like the picture you posted. But it was flourescent lighting, not sure that would really do what you need.

tenkeyless or 104...... HELP!
I like numpads, but I want to be a hipster!
-
Rock a tenkeyless. All the cool kids are doing it.
You wanna be cool, don't you?
-
All the cool kids are doing tenkeyless...
Does it feel good? Is it safe?
-
I haven't received mine yet. But I looked at a key from my friend's ninja. I don't remember seeing amy water spots under the cap.
-

Lol. Actually, yeah it feels great. And it's perfectly safe! Safer than unprotected sex or drug use anyways
-
I'll dissent, I got the 104 because it's just a bigger keyboard. More ninja keys, maximum pleasure. I'm using mine at work, too, so the Ninja must be 104 for the data entry.
-
I believe with a 104 key your cost per switch is lower.
Or you could always buy a separate keypad if you enjoy filling up slots on your USB hub.
-
Can you tell us now what is better, coated vs. uncoated, and why? Thanks.
-
I'm a little late with this one, but I can also confirm that there are no water marks inside my keys.
-

Well, I think that's 4 people now. I guess it's safe to say they're definitely not coated! Which is a great thing if you ask me.

Buy a filco mini then.

The only filco that is worth buying

...Although right now these Ducky/KBC PBT laser engraved keys are proving amazingly resistant to shining up.
I'd have to say this $35 set is beating the Topre $275 keys ($78 for replacement set) at two months of wear. And a lot less prone to wear than ABS Double Shots. Mine are real shiny and building a complete keyboard from Cherry Corp donor boards is no easy task.
You want to say the PBT's from imsto have better wear resistance than doubleshots?
Just, so I understand it correctly.
-
My ninja arrived this morning, 10 days (including a weekend) after I ordered with free shipping. And here is the packaging.
YIKES!
-
Yes.
Pretty apparent already. After two months I was starting up a pretty good shine on Cherry Corp doubleshots. Right now I can see a VERY slight shine on my spacebar on my KBC/Ducky PBTs.
I haven't tried my Signature Plastic ones on a keyboard yet.
I may have to invest a sand blasting setup like yours, ripster.
-
ripster, meant to ask you, which one do you like better for feel, ducky PBT or Cherry 2shots? Thanks.
-
Ah, that is the sticky feeling I get from the old Wyse discolored 2shots. I keep thinking my hands are dirty. The texture on PBT is nice though.
-

link? i wanna see the sandblastery
-
Just have it setup at work, typing on it now. If I put my ear right next to the keyboard, I can hear it pings when the key bottoms out. Maybe it is coming from the plate. On a few keys (not all), you can hear the spring does its springie sound when you release the cap.
But typing with your ears next to the keyboard is very bad for your back and you can't see the screen. So I don't do that. When I type with my normal sitting position, I only hear the keys bottoms out, which is perfect.
-
I think appreciation of things is a coming of age (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coming_of_age)thing. I am almost there.
-
That's typical Amazon keyboard packaging. At least the tenkeyless ones don't come in boxes that are way too big for them.
-

Can you say something in the sound?
Which one is quieter? PBT or doubleshot ABS?

My Ninja finally arrived from Amazon. The packaging was worst than litster. Same box but didn't have the plastic air padding to keep it from shifting back and forth. But it sounds normal to me, no ping or ring or whatever.

So anyone with a pinging board should pack it poorly and throw the box against the wall a few times. You know, to prove that will or won't fix the problem ;)
-
Actually he provided evidence of a loose switch before and after resoldering. Ya know, the sound files you had to claim were "doctored" because otherwise you'd have to admit defeat :)
-
The Solutor will tell you it's a soldering manufacturing error despite any evidence.
Evidence already provided, even if logic should be moooooaaar than enough to understand it.
This is known as Italian Logic.
Better than your american one. First we jail people in guantanamo, then we see if they are guilty, isn't it ?
-
Yeah, I didn't believe it though.
Look what he did to my Macro Nikkor shot! That lens is praised for it's lack of distortion. Perspective error - crooked Filco keys are as common as Filcos that ring as loud as Quasimodo.
Italians understood perspective before discovering America, so it's normal for Americans to be a little late on this, but not so late... :smokin:
-
I think spaghetti originated from China, right noodles?
-

thats why you guys like girls like snookie.
I would kill to have an italian perspective
-

It's a debated matter but yes, it's possible.
BTW what have to do spagetti and noodles with perspective and badly melted keycaps ?
-

As much as Americans jailing people in guantanamo and badly melted keycaps :)
-
Nah, litster, I wouldn't argue with the waste management guys.
AJ: Is it true that the Chinese invented spaghetti?
Tony: Now think about it. Why would people who eat with sticks invent something you need a fork to eat?
-
Nah, litster, I wouldn't argue with the waste management guys.
LOL! I eat spaghetti with chopsticks at home. Seriously! Meat sauce and all!
-

I had to use google to understand who snokie is.

It was referred to ripster's "logic" accusing someone about something w/o any evidence, not so hard to understand I presume.
-

No kidding. My wife, who is born in the US and is of Italian heritage, is a total chopsticks convert now. We only bring out forks and knives when we have steak or lasagna. Chopsticks just work better than forks except for very large chunks of food.
-
What is a fork, but four sticks?
-
Chopsticks just work better than forks except for very large chunks of food.
You can use chopsticks to eat chinese spagetti, or an horror version of the italian ones.
Eat good italian spagetti with chopstiks is almost impossible, at least is ridiculous.
-

Ah, you have a lot to learn about the art of chopsticking, young grasshopper.

gl0ry, sorry for derailing your thread. Get a TKL Filco of any switch. You will be happy. If not, you can always sell it to someone here and get different one to try. The fun is in the journey, not the destination. Good luck, have fun!
-
Ah, you have a lot to learn about the art of chopsticking, young grasshopper.
I can pick up marbles with chopsticks, master. I will learn catching flies with chopsticks next.
-
Three or four sticks, yes, but these sticks are fixed, not allowing them to move separately, which, granted, means that the fork is more stable, and easier to use, but possibly at the cost of efficiency or elegance to a skilled user of two mobile sticks.
-
I had to use google to understand who snokie is.
and you like?
-
and you like?
Frankly, no.
What you call latinas is not my favorite kind of women.
-
you must be a neopolitan. KL said only Sicilians like snookie
-
I was born in Sicily, I live in Piedmont, my grandmother was from New York, and i don't like snokie.
Why should Italians like Chilean girls so much ?
-
weren't you born that way?
-
Like many Neapolitan gentlemen, I prefer Romanian women.

Did this thread just get derailed into Jersey Shore land?

Booby feeling is the satisfaction we all seek, girls and keyboards alike.

solutor just won't admit his attraction to snookie and her xarmor counterpart

This is how we haze the newbies. With off topic banter.
I like banter. But I hate witty banter.

i remember my hazing for my fraternity, I can't speak of it though

Was there an illegal amount of goldfish involved?

Now i understand why everybody here has like 5000+ posts ^^.

I remember when I was ghostpixel

you guys treated me very well when I started here just 2 months ago. You guys are awesome! I have enough stress from work. I get lotz of lulz here! That's why I come here everyday.

I just got my filco in and will do a video on it soon. The usb cable on this thing is so short...
Can I run a usb extender and then convert to ps/2 with this thing?

Speaking of which, this place has ridiculously cheap cables: http://www.yourcablestore.com/
So many overpriced cables out there, it's a total scam.

Thanks fellas.
