Title: Inexpensive MX Blues for work
Post by: Backward_Pawn on Sun, 12 June 2011, 23:16:01
Where can I get an inexpensive MX Blue keyboard for work?  If I ask them to pay for it, they'll balk at $150 and if I buy it myself, I can't really afford another one that price at the moment.  Also, are there any keyboards I should avoid?

I was thinking maybe the razer...is it good for just typing?

You should get the razer one. I see it on sale at times for $60 at Fry's. They keycaps on the Razer are a little lighter than a Filco one but I do enjoy typing on them. I think it would be the best choice for you as they are pretty cheap.

The g80-3000 on Provantage would be a good option.

And that's more or less it. Is the sound of them not a problem?

This is a problem I also currently struggle with. I'm using my own blank Filco brown tenkeyless at work and it's perfect, but that leaves a membrane board for me at home. Employer supplies a crappy membrane board and would pay for a new board, but if I went with features that I actually need, I'm pretty sure they'd feel like I'm making them pay for lulz even though that's not the case. Specifically, I need brown switches because blues are too noisy for the neighbors in open workspace. I need NKRO (or close) because my Caps->Ctrl layout makes most non-NKRO boards fail spectacularly. And I really want tenkeyless for ergonomics. Since I'm in Finland, asking for even two of these features means the board has to be self-imported.

The G80-3000 is a decent keyboard with blues. I have one at work and a Filco at home, there's a significant difference between them. The Filco just feels smoother, there's a slight sticky-ness in the g80. I want to say it's because of the low profile keycaps on the Cherry board but I can't be certain.

But for the price it's a good keyboard. Haven't tried the Razer so I can comment on it.

At the moment I've got my own office...well, I share it with an intern. But I'll have to see how loud they are as the director of my division has an adjacent office.

Edit: I've actually got two divisional directors offices attached to mine, so I'm starting to rethink using blues.

That is a good price, but I think I'll pass on it since I enjoy being employed.  Lanx isn't too far off since one of the directors is in the chain of command above my boss.
