Title: Need help with wiring on a G80-1819HAU (missing AT cable)
Post by: BiNiaRiS on Tue, 21 June 2011, 03:52:50
So i picked up an 1819 from a recycler and they had cut off the AT cable. I wanna convert it to PS2 but I am unsure of the wiring. Is there any easy way to figure this out? The colors of the wires dont seem to match up and since I don't have the original cable, I can use an ohm meter to easily find out what i need to pair up.

Thanks in advance.

Just four wires should be connected.

5V and earth are very easy to spot, once they are connected correctly, just try  with the left two: you have 50% of chances to connect them right on the first try, 100% at the second one.

so there are 4 wires plus the shell? so 5 total?

how are they easy to spot? I have no clue what I am supposed to be looking for. There is a green, white, black, yellow and the shell wire. I've got the shell wire right, but the rest I'm not sure about.

Shield and brown wires are usually connected together, so consider them one wire. It's easy to spot because connected to the metal parts of your pc and your keyboard.

Once you have ground, 5V is easy to find, even if you don't have great experience, you should see one or more electrolytic capacitors connected between it and ground.

The last wires are the data ones, if you connect them reversed the keyboard don't work but you don't burn anything.

The PS2 or AT connectors pinout are easy to find with google.

Btw post a photo of front and back of PCB so I can be more precise

Ok.

Looking at the first photo, in order from bottom to top:

The first black cable is the shield.

The second one is the 0V

The blue cable is +5V

Yellow and white are the data and clock lines (not necessarily in this order)

here you can find the PS2 connector pinout

There are 2 black cables. One is completely encased in black plastic and the other one only had a a little at the end. My photos dont really show it. I assumed that the cable that was pretty much open wire was the shield. That was wrong? From what you listed, you are saying that it is the 0V. Just wanna make sure before I wire it up.

The first, near the PCB edge should be the shield, btw is just a nitpicking distinction as shield and 0V are connected together, so don't worry for this.

Awesome, thanks man. Just got one of the 2 boards i have working. The other one fails at post. The caps lock/scroll lock light up and switch the lights on but i cant seem to get it working. I'll have to give it another shot.
